It Is Our Privilege And Purpose To Serve You
Ruth Rolfson
October 15, 1926 - October 3, 2023

Residence: Watford City, North Dakota

Ruth was born October 15, 1926, in Patent Gate Township to Torvald and Anna Bertinuson, the youngest of eight children.

The Timber Creek Lutheran Church stood atop a hill one mile south of their home and it was there she was baptized and received her first Sunday school training, the beginning of a deep and abiding faith.

She attended the Patent State Country school through the seventh grade, her teacher the last two years being her sister, Theresa. Because of the school closing there, she finished the eighth grade in Watford City, where she stayed with her sister, Evelyn Sanford.

She was confirmed in 1942 at First Lutheran Church in Watford City and graduated from Watford City High school in 1944. In 1945 she married Arkjer Rolfson, and they began their married life on their farm northeast of Watford City, living there together for fifty-nine years. Arkjer died in 2004.

She was an active member of her community belonging to the Garden Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid and teaching Sunday School, a Homemakers Club, American Legion Aux., McKenzie County Hospital Aux, Watford City Woman’s Club, Fifty Years in the Saddle, Sons of Norway, the Heritage Choir, and one of the most rewarding, as a 4-H leader for several years.

An avid reader, she especially enjoyed books with a historical background. World events and places fascinated her, and she enjoyed being able to visit many of them, always with a spirit of adventure.
She enjoyed working in her yard and many flower gardens. When asked what her favorite flower was, she couldn’t decide – “I love them all”.

As a daughter of immigrant parents who became Homesteaders, at an early age she was taught to value what this country has given to so many.

She and Arkjer enjoyed rearing their three children and in turn watching their eleven grandchildren grow up. Sixteen great grandchildren joined the family circle.

She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at the Good Shepherd Home in Watford City.

One of my favorite visits back in 1999.
Sending my thoughts and prayers. Ruth is so special and I will always cherish the Memories of visiting the farm, her cooking and listening to her stories. On my last visit with her in 2019, she gave me good advice on relationships and happiness. Heaven has been blessed with a true angel!

Your family has my condolences--like all the Bertinuson's she was kind and giving. I was pleased to have met her when I traveled to Watford City with my friend, Shirley Bertinuson. I'd like to make a donation in her memory-please let me know. Darlene Hamady

Your family's loss gives thought to the passing of an era that we share. Our families paralleled for more than a century, coming from Norway and homesteading in McKenzie County. I send my condolences to her family and wish all of her survivors my best.

By way of background Ruth's mother-in-law, Ingrid (Arkjer' s mother) was my great grandfather Oscar Forland's sister. Both immigrated to the US from Norway at the turn of 1900s to seek fame and fortune in Western North Dakotas as it was last tract of land in the lower 48 states that was opened for Homesteading. Growing up around Watford City, I knew Ruth and Arkjer as well as Ruth's in-laws fairly well. In later years I started writing weekly letters to Ruth that related my life in Iowa' which she enjoyed reading very much. I will miss the weekly contact with Ruth and I will miss Ruth. My brothers (David and Pete) and I visited Watford City in the spring of 2018. We stopped by to see Ruth -- what an amazing intellect and a very classy lady. This was the last time we saw her. My best to the Rolfson family.

Our condolences and sympathy. I remember Aunt Ruth fondly from my childhood trips to North Dakota with my grandfather Edward Bertinuson.
