Allen George Haugen
December 2, 1949 - August 23, 2023

Place of Birth: Williston, North Dakota
Residence: Surprise, AZ formerly of Williston, ND
Age: 73

Allen George Haugen, 73, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the Arizona Veterans Home in Phoenix Arizona. He fought a valiant fight against cancer for the past fifteen years.

Allen was born December 2, 1949, in Williston, ND, to George and Marian (Lund) Haugen and was the last of five children. He attended school in Grenora, graduating from Grenora High School with the class of 1967. There he participated in baseball and football. He was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Grenora.

He continued his education at North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, graduating in 1969 with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel Mechanics. While at NDSSS, he boxed in Golden Gloves and had a mean right hook! After college, Allen joined the Army and was deployed to Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1972. Shortly after, he started working at the John Deere dealership in Billings. Then he moved to Grenora to continue his mechanic career at Grenora Implement. A few years later, Allen found his passion in the oil patch where he worked his way up to driller. He worked with many rig hands and took pride in showing them the ropes. During his career Allen worked in North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.

While living at the farm near Grenora, he met Wendy Wood. They were married in 1972 and to this union one child was born, Scott. Their marriage ended in divorce, but they remained friends.

Allen stepped away to try his hand at farming after his brother Dennis, passed away in 1991. He worked in Arizona for a brief time and returned to the oil patch - which was his happy place! His last job was as a high-level oil field consultant with Bonetrail Rentals, owned by his best friend Larry Jacobson. He retired after that.

Allen enjoyed cooking. His favorites were bean soup, meatloaf and beef stew. He loved watching any John Wayne show on TV. He really enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings during the season. After he moved to Arizona, he started following the Cardinals and Diamondbacks. He would check Facebook daily and really enjoyed keeping up with everyone, and reconnecting with friends from the past.

He enjoyed every minute of a social gathering and was the life of the party. Allen was born a giver. He wanted the best for those close to him and was constantly putting others needs ahead of his own. He had the biggest heart and he lived each day to the fullest...most of the time with a silver can and a red pack nearby. He worked hard and would be the first to say he played hard too.

Allen is survived by his son, Scott of Williston, ND; siblings, Ruby (John) Bjornholt of Fountain Hills, AZ, Larry (Dyan) Haugen of Scottsdale, AZ; brother-in-law, Les Tomazic of Glendale, AZ; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marian and George Haugen; brother, Dennis Haugen; sister, Ann Tomazic; sister-in-law, Bernice Haugen; nephew, Steven Haugen; niece, LeeAnn Haugen.

I will miss AL as he stayed with Scott during the summer. We had many a visits over the fence. In the early years, I would tease him about the tobacco crop, since he would throw the butts into the street in front of my house. It took several years to convince that AL was not a "scarey man" but was a gentle giant.

One of the last times that I talked to Mr. Haugen before he moved to Arizona was one of the funniest interactions I've ever had.

Mr. Haugen had a tendency to go for a walk after dark. He was walking on Pheasant Run Parkway one night as I was patrolling the neighborhood.

I saw Mr. Haugen walking and rolled down the passenger side window and asked him if he was lost. I think that i startled him because he started out "No sir, I'm just going for a walk" and then he realized who I was, and we had ourselves quite a long conversation.

A childhood memory that I have of Mr. Haugen was that he bought Scott the GI Joe aircraft carrier. Definitely the only time in my life that I actually got to see and touch that thing if real life. Scott was the envy of every GI Joe playing child in Williston at the time. Definitely earned the dad of the year award that Christmas.

Mr. Haugen thank you for your service!

You will be missed.

I worked with Allen's son, Scott, for five years at 660KEYZ News Radio in Williston before moving to East Tennessee in the fall of 2022. While I never had the chance to meet Allen, Scott always beamed when speaking of his dad and sharing stories of their times together which often included some great advice. May he rest in peace. I know he'll be truly missed. My sympathies to my friend, Scott and the family. Robin

Allen and I spent a lot of time together in the Army. We went through three phases of training together at Ft. Belvoir and later meet up for awhile in Vietnam. He was a great friend and we had so many good times together. Love you Brother
