It Is Our Privilege And Purpose To Serve You
Helen Estelle Butterfield
January 5, 1943 - February 16, 2023

Place of Birth: San Francisco, California
Residence: Glendive, Montana
Age: 80

Helen Estelle Rawlins was born on January 5th, 1943, to Mary Janet and Estele James “E.J.” Rawlins in San Francisco, CA. In 1959, she married Robert Bridges in Great Falls, Montana. Helen graduated from Sidney High School in 1961.

Robert’s military career took them to Washington State and over the years they had 3 children: Sue, Rob & Barb. Later, Helen married Joe King and had 3 more children: Tony, Josie and Brian. She then moved back to Sidney, MT to be near her mother. In 1975, after her mother’s death, she moved back to Washington state with her children. In 1978, she met and married Bob Butterfield. Her and Bob were members of the VFW in Raymond, Washington, where she served as president. She was also very involved with the Special Olympics in Raymond. In the late 1980’s, they moved back to Sidney where Helen had a career in retail working for the Sidney and Glendive Mini Mart locations. She then became employed with the Boys & Girls Club because she loved working with children.

Helen enjoyed doing arts & crafts, baking & decorating cookies with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and adorning her home with homemade decorations for all holidays. She also enjoyed decorating event cakes - including the wedding cakes for three of her granddaughters. Helen loved to spend time in her yard planting flowers in her gardens.

Helen is survived by three of her children: Sue Hurley of Sidney, Montana; Rob (Judy) Bridges of Woodbridge, Virginia; and Barb (Tim) Nygaard of Williston, North Dakota; nine grandchildren: Marcia, Staci, Tricia, Timmy, Kali, Desta, Amanda, Chris, and Steven; and 14 great grandchildren.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Butterfield; her two infant children, Tony and Josie; son, Brian S. King; mother, Mary Janet Dotson; brother, Allan Dotson; and her sister, Mary Alice Swanson.

I met Helen when my Mother-in-law became a resident at EMVH. After Covid closures they sat at the same table. We lost Mom over a year ago. But, I help with the Sunday evening church services there, so I continued weekly visits to the Vet's home.

I find each of the residents to be very special and I hold them in my heart. But sometimes one will sneak into your heart and find a special place there. Helen did that.

She used to refuse my invites to church, but willingly accepted my hugs and often said she loved me. I loved her, too and she assured me she was friends with Jesus. Helen loved to sing and several months ago finally began accepting my invitation to church.

Sometimes, I do the speaking at these services, but when someone else spoke I would take the chance to sit with her and hold her hand.

That's what I did on Sunday Feb. 12th, I am so glad I did because last night I was alarmed when Helen wasn't at her spot in the dining room and after rushing to her room, no longer found her name on the door. My dear friend, Helen, passed from death to life on Thursday. I will miss you until we meet again.

Take the chance and love the people in your life. They need it. You need it.

My sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers to Helens family. I worked with her at Mini Mart, what a lady and no question how much she loved her grandchildren.

Helen was a dear friend and I am heartbroken that she is gone. Seeing her every Sunday was a highlight of my day. When I met her several years ago I thought she hated me but one Halloween I was at the Vets Home with my grandma, I was dressed as a Roman soldier and I sat next to Helen. She talked to me and teased me and we became friends. I got to see her every Sunday and would sneak up on her in the dining room. She always told me that I didn't get her but I told her I would get her next time. I would give her a hug and sit next to her to ask how she was doing and if her food was good. I'm sad that I won't see her on Sundays anymore but I love her and she brought so much joy to my life. Until we meet again.
