Guido Franklin Vaira
December 20, 1926 - November 29, 2020

Place of Birth: Lambert, MT
Residence: Sidney, MT
Age: 95

Guido Franklin Vaira was born December 20, 1926 To Aldo and Polly at Springlake. He was the fifth of 7 boys. As a youngster, he spent a lot of time herding sheep at Redwater and looking for arrowheads. He went to country schools and then into Sidney for high school, graduating in 1945. Guido and Glenn Mavity rode bareback horses at rodeos for several years. He was also in the army for 2 years.
Guido and Lavonne Larson married on June 15, 1951. They lived at Redwater and he also worked at a ranch near Circle for a few years. Guido and Lavonne had Vicki and Shane. They raised cows at the ranch north of Richey. There were also many horses, dogs, cats, and other animals. Guido’s dogs listened to him, and sometimes to other people.
In 1976, Guido and other family members traveled to Northern Italy and had a good time eating and drinking and visiting relatives.
Guido always liked music and was in a few different old time bands. Aldo started the Vaira Band and Guido played trumpet with Glenn Mavity. Jim played drums, Marybelle and June played clarinet. Later, there was another Vaira Band with Jim, Guido, Don, Janice, Vicki, and many other grandkids and friends at different times. He also was part of the Redwater Ranchers, a group that played at the Richey Senior Citizens for many years. He and Lavonne enjoyed dancing through the years. After she passed in 1995, he and Audrey Samson danced and enjoyed many good times together.
Guido moved to Sidney, but still drove to the farm daily for a few years, at top speed of 40 miles an hour.
After a few hospital visits, he moved to Sidney’s Extended Care, and then to the vet’s home in Glendive.
He was very comfortable there, and was known for his big smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aldo and Polly; wife, Lavonne; 4 brothers, Adolphus, Alfred, Jim, and Bud.
He is survived by his children Vicki and Shane(Jo), 7 grandchildren- Trevor (Danica), Troy (Abby), Tara, Tia (James), Tate, Taylor, Kalen, 2 great-grandchildren Trig and Cedar, and brothers, Paul, and Eddy.

To Guido's family, Kenny's memories and interactions with Guido all involve horses and Girard dances. I first met him when we were first married going out to their house to buy 3 "winter projects"!

I still remember the 1st time I was at Guido's house
I must of been about 12 years old. My step dad and Guido were buds and that's how I got to know Guido's family.
Our deepest condolences to Vicki and Shane and family.
The Vaira families are all very good people, it is a honor for me to know them.

Aunt Doreen, I can definitely imagine the Vaira shindig happening in heaven! I've been listening to the Vaira Band on the tape they recorded in 2000. I'm able to pick out uncle Guido playing the trumpet. Oh how I loved playing in the Vaira band with everyone-such great memories. I realize now what a quiet man Guido was-but always had that big gigantic smile that you can't forget. I'll always remember going to Guido and Lavonne's when we were up working at Redwater and Lavonne always had cookies for us when we stopped by. I'll never forget the ice skating party they had right there by the house either-what a fun time! Shane, Vicki and family, I know it's hard to say goodbye. I'm sure you have great memories to carry with you too and I hope you feel his presence each time. Love to you all

And so an era ends. Redwater Ranchers , Viara Band. Watched them and other bands growing up not knowing what I was seeing.and when they were gone there would be no more. Death was explained to me when I was very very young. I was told that the clouds open and you hear trumpets playing. If that is so , Guido is home.

I was so sorry to learn that Guido had passed away. Before the pandemic prevented it I arranged the Sunday evening church services at EMVH and was always pleased to when Guido would attend. He had a smile that lit up not just a room but the hearts of those in it. May God comfort his family.

I’m so sorry to hear about Uncle Guido’s passing. He was a gentle soul with a smile that would light up a room. I always sat in awe when he played his trumpet in the Vaira band as it came so natural to him and so effortless. Watching him made me pick it up in grade school and played the trumpet through out high school hoping to be just half as good as he was. The memories you have of him will last a lifetime. What a long fulfilled life he had. There is definitely a waltz and a polka going on in heaven right now and I can be certain there’s a bottle of wine or two to celebrate. Hugs to you all during this time.
