Celebrating the Life of Sharon Kay (Dykes) Wood
Sharon Kay (Dykes) Wood was born on October 10, 1947, in Miles City, Montana, to Ray and Laverna (Green) Dykes. She was the fifth of eight children and spent her childhood in Miles City, where she developed the strength, resilience, and sense of humor that would carry her throughout her life.
Sharon was first married in Miles City and became the devoted mother of six children: Donny, Shelley, Kevin, Mike, Barry, and Justin. Raising five rebellious boys and one daughter was no easy task. She was strong, determined, and never afraid to speak her mind. Although her first marriage eventually ended, Sharon embraced a new chapter with courage and independence, building a life centered around her children and family.
As her boys grew older, Sharon rarely missed the chance to cheer them on at demolition derbies and bump-and-run races. You always knew where she was in the crowd because she was the one yelling at the top of her lungs, cheering her boys on with unmatched enthusiasm. Win or lose, she was their biggest fan, and there was no doubt how proud she was of each of them.
Sharon spent many years working as a housekeeper in Miles City, where her hard work and kind heart touched the lives of many. It was there that she met the love of her life, Charles "Chuck" Rogers. Together they found the happiness and partnership they had both been searching for. They later made their home in Sidney, Montana, where Sharon transferred to the Richland Motor Inn while Chuck started his own drywall business.
Some of Sharon and Chuck's happiest days were spent down by the river with fishing poles in hand, talking, laughing, listening to country music, and simply enjoying each other's company. They found joy in life's simple moments and cherished every day they had together. Chuck passed away on October 16, 2016. Sharon missed him deeply every day afterward and carried his memory in her heart for the rest of her life.
Family was Sharon's greatest blessing and proudest accomplishment. She was the proud grandmother of 24 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren, a number she loved to share with anyone who would listen. Nothing made her happier than welcoming the newest baby into the family whenever she could.
Sharon cherished family gatherings. They were often loud, full of laughter, stories, and, as any big family knows, maybe even a disagreement or two. But once the meal was on the table, everything was forgotten, everyone found their seat, and family came first. Those gatherings became some of the family's most treasured memories.
No family gathering was complete without Sharon's famous macaroni salad, glorified rice, and pineapple upside-down cake. These dishes became family favorites that everyone looked forward to, and today they are lovingly prepared once again to honor the woman who made them with so much love.
Sharon also loved the simple joys in life. If there was a garage sale, thrift store, or shopping trip, she was ready to go. She loved searching for hidden treasures and could rarely pass up a good bargain. Her closet was never quite full enough for "just one more" pair of tennis shoes, and if she spotted a Tweety Bird shirt, there was a good chance it was coming home with her. Those little things brought her so much happiness and will forever remind her family of the woman who found joy in life's simple pleasures.
On July 23, 2026, Sharon passed away at Sidney Health Center Extended Care in Sidney, Montana. Though her family grieves her loss, they find comfort in knowing she is reunited with Chuck, son Barry, and those who went before her.
Sharon is survived by her children: Donny Wood (Colette) of Miles City, Montana; Shelley Carlson of Sidney, Montana; Kevin Wood of Miles City, Montana; Mike and Debbie Wood of Miles City, Montana; and Justin Wood (Timber) of Miles City, Montana; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Elletta Knowles of Billings, Montana, and LaVonne Allen of Miles City, Montana; her brother, Jessie Dykes (Jackie) of Miles City, Montana; her sister-in-law, Kay Dykes of Gillette, Wyoming; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Laverna Dykes; her brothers, Harold Dykes and Dennis Dykes; her sisters, Haddie Jones and Cathy Dykes; her brother-in-law, Bob Knowles; her beloved son, Barry Wood; the love of her life, Charles "Chuck" Rogers; and one cherished grandbaby.
As we celebrate Sharon's life, we invite you to remember her not with sadness alone, but with smiles, stories, laughter, and love. Share a meal, hug your family a little tighter, and cherish the time you have together. And if you happen to pass a garage sale, spot a Tweety Bird shirt, or find yourself tempted by another pair of tennis shoes, think of Sharon and smile. Her legacy lives on in every generation she helped shape, every tradition she created, every recipe she passed down, and every heart that was fortunate enough to know and love her.
