Philip "Phil" C Kuylen
February 19, 1964 - July 26, 2026

Place of Birth: Sidney, Montana
Residence: Sidney, Montana
Age: 62

Philip Clement Kuylen, 62, of Sidney, Montana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Phil was born on February 19, 1964, in Sidney, Montana, to Louie and Eva Kuylen. A lifelong Sidney resident, Phil built a life defined by hard work, quiet generosity, and an unwavering love for his family and friends. He was a man of integrity whose kindness spoke louder than words and whose presence made everyone around him feel at home.
For more than 30 years, Phil worked at Farm and Home in Sidney, where he became known not only for his knowledge and dependability, but also for his willingness to help anyone who walked through the door. Customers came to appreciate his honest advice, friendly smile, and genuine desire to make their day a little easier. To many, he was more than an employee, he was a trusted friend.
Outside of work, Phil found his greatest peace outdoors. He loved spending time fishing, especially on his son Lance’s boat. Those quiet days on the water, surrounded by family, became some of his most treasured memories.
He also had a passion for gardening. Every spring and summer, he devoted countless hours to cultivating a beautiful garden that produced more vegetables than he could ever use himself. True to his generous nature, he shared his harvest freely with anyone who wanted it—and often with those who never even asked. Giving to others simply came naturally to him.
His backyard was another reflection of the man he was. The patio behind his home became an inviting oasis where family, neighbors, and friends gathered to relax, laugh, and enjoy one another’s company. It was a place where cold beers, warm summer evenings, and conversations that stretched long after sunset created memories that will be cherished forever.
Among those friendships, none meant more than those he shared with his next-door neighbors, Chad and Melissa Quilling. During their nineteen years as neighbors, they became far more than friends—they became family. Through everyday visits over the fence, countless conversations on the patio, celebrations, and life’s challenges, Chad and Melissa were constant sources of friendship, laughter, and support. Their love and unwavering presence brought Phil tremendous comfort, and their bond was one he deeply treasured. Phil was able to rest peacefully knowing that his beloved dog, Dolly, will be spending her days resting in the backyard with the Quilling’s.
Phil’s greatest gift was his selfless heart. He was always willing to lend a hand, share what he had, or simply be there when someone needed him. He never sought recognition for his kindness; he simply believed in taking care of others. His many lifelong friendships are a testament to the kind of man he was—a loyal friend, a trusted neighbor, and someone people could always count on.
Although our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort in knowing that Phil’s legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply, the friendships he cherished, and the countless lives he quietly touched through simple acts of kindness. He taught us that life’s greatest blessings are found in time spent together, in helping others without expecting anything in return, and in appreciating the simple moments that become our most treasured memories.
If you stopped by Phil’s house, chances are you wouldn’t leave empty-handed. It might have been a bag of fresh vegetables from his garden, a story about the one that got away, or an invitation to sit on the patio with a cold beer and enjoy a warm Montana summer evening. He had a remarkable way of making everyone feel like family. His home was a place where laughter was shared freely, friendships were strengthened, and no one was ever made to feel like a stranger. That simple gift of making people feel welcome may be the legacy he leaves behind most.
Phil will be remembered every time a fishing line is cast across calm water, a garden is shared with a neighbor, friends gather on a warm summer evening, or a simple act of kindness is offered without expecting anything in return.
Above all else, Phil was a devoted father and grandfather. He is lovingly survived by his children, Tena Kuylen; Alisha (Dom) Breding; Byron Kuylen; Laura (Anthony) Ashby; Lance (Tori) Kuylen; and Jeff (Alyssa) Kuylen. He was also the proud grandfather of countless grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with his family and watching it continue to grow.
He is also survived by his sister, Emily (Ken) Hoff; his sister, Ruth Burns; his brother, Mark Kuylen; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and an incredible number of lifelong friends whose lives were made better by knowing him.
Phil was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Louie and Eva Kuylen; his cherished baby sister, Mary Kay Kuylen; and his brother-in-law and dear friend, Greg Burns.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.”
— Psalm 23:1–3
“The measure of a man’s life is not found in what he leaves behind, but in the lives he leaves better.”
