Mitchell "Mitch" Sondrol
April 20, 1962 - September 24, 2023

Place of Birth: Tioga, North Dakota
Residence: Watford City, North Dakota
Age: 61

Mitchell (Mitch) Sondrol, 61, of rural Watford City, ND passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023, at the McKenzie County Hospital in Watford City.

Mitch was born on April 20, 1962, in Tioga, ND to Norman and Marlene Sondrol. As a young boy his nickname was “Moose” as a testament to his build and strength. They lived in Tioga through Mitch’s first grade year. The family then moved to Watford City. While in high school he enjoyed wrestling and playing football. He graduated from Watford City High School in 1981.

After graduating, he worked in several different industries. Mitch was a hard worker and very mechanically inclined. He loved working with his hands and could fix and repair small engine equipment as well as large, heavy farm and construction equipment. At a young age he completely tore down a snowmobile engine, drive assembly and track assembly. He had every part and piece spread across the Quonset floor and nothing was marked or labeled. We thought we would never see that snowmobile operating again. Once Mitch had what he needed, he had the machine reassembled and up and running like new with no extra parts and no missing parts. He also enjoyed helping his dad on the family farm during his high school years and for a couple of years thereafter.

Mitch married Donna Sterling in 1985. Together they had a son, Damon.

Later Mitch moved to Arizona where he spent several years in Mesa and worked in construction, painting and surveying for road construction. While in Mesa he met Stephanie Hughes. To this union their daughter Chastity was born.

After many years in Arizona, Mitch returned to Watford City where he worked for Northern Pump and Compression and delivered bulk fuel for Rolfson Oil. In more recent years he helped operate a scoria business with many other projects on the side. Mitch always had small projects in the works and was good at bartering, I’ll help you with that if you’ll help me with this!

One of Mitch’s favorite things to do was ride his side-by-side. Whether it was the prairie of North Dakota or desert of Arizona, he took advantage of every opportunity he had to ride and be with nature.

Mitch enjoyed visiting with family and friends and always welcomed visitors to his home and man cave.

Mitch loved his pets. His dog Cassie was very special to him. She was with him most everywhere he went including winter trips back to Arizona.

Mitch was always smiling, even throughout his painful battle with cancer. He had a very unique and distinctive laugh immediately recognizable to all who knew him.

He is survived by his long-time girlfriend Tammy Cook; father Norman Sondrol of Bismarck ND; son Damon Sondrol of Watford City ND; daughter Chastity Hughes of Mesa AZ; grandchildren Nathan Sondrol; Mark, Daxton and Raider Hughes; sister Wendy (Al) Luckow of Thompson Falls MT; brother Steven (Diane) of Wichita, KS; nephews Brant Luckow, Jared Luckow, Travis Luckow, Austin Sondrol, Branson Sondrol; nieces Crystal Sondrol and Jessica Oswald; and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

Mitch was preceded in death by his mother Marlene and his brother Kevin; grandparents Ernest and Dorothy Sondrol, and Oscar and Olga Skogen.

To you all…. Spent many hours riding our Honda SL 70’s with Mitch when we were just young kids. And whenever I found myself back in WC and met up with him, it was like we seen each other all the time, as we could just start a conversation where we left off the last time we met.
Rest In Peace Mitch “HOOCH”

Sorry for the loss to all friends and family. I didn't know him well in his later years. But he will be missed. And I thank you for having the service live streamed so that I could watch along and be there with my family. Rest In Peace Mitch.

Norm, Steve (Diane), Wendy (Al) and extended family members - I am so sorry for your loss. I just finished live-streaming the funeral service and will forever regret not doing whatever it took to be there. Though I only met Mitch once at a Sondrol family reunion in the Badlands perhaps nearly 40 years ago now, I could tell Mitch and I could have a good time together if our lives had not drawn us in different directions.

Rest in peace Mitch. Sondrol family be comforted.
