Nita Flatland
November 5, 1954 - April 29, 2023

Place of Birth: Watford City, ND
Residence: Watford City, ND
Age: 68

Nita Ann Flatland was born in Watford City, ND on November 5, 1954, to William (Bill) and Audre Clifton. She was one of 4 siblings. Her family ran multiple businesses in Watford with a grocery store, truck stop, and the PDQ in Arnegard.

Nita graduated from WCHS in 1972 and went on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Williston State College in 1974.
Nita married Lyle Flatland on November 29th, 1975, and they went on to have three children: Matthew, Amber, and Rebecca. Nita set up a daycare when the kids were young and once the kids got older, she moved to teaching at Johnson Corners Christian Academy until her kids were out of high school. Not only did she teach, but she drove the school bus faithfully for several years.

After the kids were out of the house she worked at Mike’s Super Value and Larsen’s Service Drug.

In the 80’s she joined McKenzie County Right to Life and started the Right to Life Craft Auction which the family is glad to see has been taken up by others after she was unable to lead it.
In April 2014, Nita was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, but beat the normal odds for survival and was able to witness the marriage of Rebecca to Daniel Reiff and the adoption and birth of 2 additional grandchildren (Abilash and Clara). The family also was able to enjoy a trip to Norway in 2017 where we met some of Lyle’s relatives.

Nita loved traveling, crocheting, quilting, and enjoying time with the people in Watford and the surrounding area. Lyle and Nita both accepted Christ as their Savior in January 1980 and they felt blessed to be surrounded by a strong group of believers in the area.

Nita is survived by her husband Lyle. Her children Matthew (TA) Flatland of St Michael, MN; Amber (John) Pankratz of Minot, ND; and Rebecca (Daniel) Reiff of Plymouth, MN and seven grandchildren: Noel Pankratz, Eli Pankratz, Bryn Flatland, Lael Flatland, Isaac Pankratz, Abilash Flatland, and Clara Reiff. Sister Laura Goff, Brother James Clifton, Brother Thomas Clifton and their families.

Nita was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Audre Clifton.

I was so sorry to hear of Nita's passing. I worked with her at JCCA. We used to carpool together. Sometimes she would drive the bus and I would be her co-pilot. She was such a loving and caring person. She will be missed.

Lyle and Nita were such a blessing to me during the short time I lived in Watford City. They welcomed me into their home and fed me with good food and warm friendship. I have fond memories of working with Nita at JCCA. She always had a smile, and she was passionate about life and Jesus. I am sorry to hear of her loss, and I pray for Lyle and Nita's extended family as they mourn her death. Praise God for the promise we will see her again in glory.

I was saddened by the news of Nita’s passing. We met at Scottsdale, AZ where her and my late husband were taking treatment at Envita. Nita’s strong faith and her love for Lyle and her family were evident. I enjoyed meeting some of her family and friends during our time there. We stayed in touch. My sincere sympathy — blessed be her memory!

Jesus wept. And we are weeping over the loss of Nita. Such a great lady. We were friends of Nita and Lyle since we left Watford years ago. She and Lyle would stop and visit with us in Arkansas on her way to visit her brother. Her faith was really strong and evident in both her and Lyle. May God bless the family as they morn.
