Shannon Dean Kulland
October 3, 1974 - January 4, 2023

Place of Birth: Stanley, North Dakota
Residence: Palermo, North Dakota
Age: 48

Shannon Kulland, 48, of Palermo, ND passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at his residence in Hildale, UT.

"The sun rises in the east, the sun set in the west, what happens in between is called "life".

The sun rose on October 3, 1974 and Shannon Dean Kulland began his journey in life. He was born in Stanley, ND to Virgil and Karen M (Paetz) Kulland. Shannon was blessed to be the older brother to his twin sisters. He grew up on the family farm, Oakland Township, just north of Parshall, ND. Shannon attended grades K-12 and graduated from Parshall High School in May, 1993. He continued his education at Fort Berthold Community College (FBCC), majoring in the Farm and Ranch Management Program.

Shannon was an enrolled member of the Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara (MHA) Nation, also known as the Three Affiliated Tribes. His tribal culture stems from his mother, grandmother; Josephine (Grinnell) Paetz, and great-grandmother; Maggie Old Dog Grinnell, all belonged to the Prairie Chicken Clan. Shannon being a direct descendent of Chief Old Dog, was proud of his Native American culture and heritage.

Shannon had a lengthy career in the oilfield, starting at the early age of 17 years old, as a floor hand working his way up to position of directional driller, for various oil companies. His career took him to many different places including; North Dakota, Colorado, Texas and Pennsylvania. He took a great deal of pride in all his positions, especially when he was chosen to help build his own rig in Snider, Texas. He also, was a ranch hand at the MHA Nation Healing Horse Ranch.

Growing up, Shannon had many hobbies such as fishing, hunting, boating, camping, snowmobiling, horses, and riding four-wheeler. During his childhood, he and his sisters spent many hours, outdoors just being "farm kids". His love for animals especially, his dogs was above all. Shannon would make a trip to the grocery store and come home with a stray dog that later became his best friend. This is a family trait that he inherited from his father. His favorite hobby and mastered was socializing. He loved hanging out with his friends. He was a great storyteller and loved laughter. The phrase, "Enter as a stranger, leave as a friend" was truly his lifestyle. He was soft spoken, kind-hearted, humble and very giving.

He shared a special bond with his grandma, Mildred Kulland, who lived next door on the family farm. He did just as much as for her as she did for him....they were quite the pair. Their bond remained strong until her passing.

Shannon is survived by his mother, Karen M. Paetz, PhD, of Bismarck; twin sisters, Summer (Curt) Meyer of Blasidell; Stacey (Jason) Barstad of Stanley; and his nieces and nephews, Bray, Kassie, Leevi, Tristen, Trenedi, and Tyke.

He is preceded in death by his father, Dean Kulland (2003).

The sun set on January 4, 2023 when Shannon passed and rejoined his father and all his many relatives in heaven.

I worked with Shannon years ago on the rigs, and recently attended a sales conference in Kansas City, Mo. where I was very happy to run into him and chat. He was a great guy and the type of NoDak friend were no matter how long it had been you could strike up a conversation like you had seen him yesterday. Rest In Peace Shannon. You will be missed.

I remember Shannon as a young boy living on the farm with his mom and dad, twin sisters and Mildred. Shannon always had a smile on his face. I hope Shannon finds peace while reconnecting with his father, Dean and his grandmother, Mildred. RIP!
