Evelyn Irene (Brenden) Enget was born December 10th, 1927 in White Earth, ND to Adolph and Margaret (Lein) Brenden. She passed away in the early morning of May 8th, 2021, at the age of 93.
Evelyn attended school in White Earth and graduated from Powers Lake High School in 1946. She taught at country schools, and often would board at families houses who lived near the schools, cleaned and babysat for the people while staying there. On November 24th, 1946 Evelyn eloped to Plentywood, MT with Herman Enget. They resided in Powers Lake. After the loss of their first baby, they raised five children, Byron Curtis, Kurt Davis, Corrine Adele, Kelly Lynn and Colette Irene.
Herman and Evelyn farmed and Herman also worked on the Railroad. One day Herman came home and told her he had rented a cafe and they were going into business!! With the help of an experienced dear friend, Evelyn learned to make pies and they started their life long career in the cafe business in 1961, renting and operating the Pine Shack with their youngest being only 3 months old. In 1966 they rented the Koffee Kup Cafe. In the early 70's Herman and Evelyn purchased the Sellie's Ford Garage, which was remodeled into the Wagon Wheel Cafe by Herman, Evelyn and Benny Myre and continued the Cafe business until retirement in 1990. Through these years many bachelors, widowers, retired couples and anyone who didn't have family near by, were invited in to celebrate the holidays with our family.
Evelyn continued baking and cooking at the Sr. Citizens for years. She also continued to make pies, cookies, donuts and lefse for many people that kept ordering by the dozens. Many events were noted around the area with "Evelyn's donuts served"
Evelyn was always up for an adventure, skiing at Bottineau, sliding or skiing down Tibbets Hill, fishing with grandkids, golfing (last summer at 92 yrs) and many others. A trip to Norway was a huge highlight for her. Evelyn remained active baking until March when her health started to decline.
She was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church, Sons of Norway, and a faithful visitor to many friends and shut-ins through her years.
