Curt N Christensen
November 23, 1948 - January 19, 2021

Place of Birth: Williston, ND
Residence: Sidney, Montana
Age: 72

Dr. Curtis (Curt) Neil Christensen died early Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021, after a courageous, hard-fought battle with cancer.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Event Center at the Richland County Fairgrounds, with Curt’s brother, Russ Christensen, officiating. All are welcome, but masks and social distancing are required. The service will be livestreamed www.fulkersons.com.

Curt was born Nov. 23, 1948, to Vernon and Mabel (Welter) Christensen in Williston, ND. He grew up in Plentywood, MT, where his dogged determination started young. He had relentless dedication when it came to school and sports. In fact, he played a full quarter of a high school football game with a broken arm until the coaches forced him to sit out.

After earning his undergraduate degree in three years at Montana State University in 1970, he married his childhood sweetheart and neighbor, Jill Johnston, on June 20 of that same year. In 1974 he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of Oregon. Curt and Jill then moved to Sidney, MT, where he began his 40-plus-year tenure at his dental practice. As a dentist he was skillful, but it was the constant banter with his patients that kept him in practice so long. Curt loved the Sidney community, and was involved in numerous activities and organizations such as Kiwanis, baseball, softball, hockey, coaching his kids, working at high school sporting events, and bartending at the country club, just to name a few. He retired in November 2015.

He was proud of all of his roles, including husband, dad, “papa,” brother and friend. Those who knew him best easily saw past his sometimes gruff persona to the teddy bear within. He had a special place in his heart for “his girls,” a group of Mandi’s close friends that considered him a “second dad.” He enjoyed time with friends golfing, bowling, fishing, and more.

One of Curt’s most poignant experiences was a trip in 2012 to Poland with his brother, Russ, and their wives, to spread some of their war-hero father’s ashes at the site where his bomber plane was shot down during WWII and he became a POW.

In the more recent years, Curt also enjoyed times of solitude. His true passion (fishing, fishing, and more fishing) called him out to the lake spring, summer, and fall. He enjoyed teaching his grandkids how to properly fillet a fish and show them “the best view in all of ND” from the cabin deck. He often took a ribbing from his family about his fashion sense; shirt-free paired with flip-flops was his favorite style. His love of the sun took him to Arizona for several winters, too.

He will be remembered for his professional dental care, but maybe even more so for his stubborn nature, teasing banter and his slow smile that let you in on his joke. He often was a man of few words, and incredible hugs.

Curt leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Jill; his sons, Kai (Jamie) and Scott; daughter Mandi (Eric) Allen; grandchildren Mason, Kaitlynn, Taylor, Grady, Brody, Brayden and Cooper; his brothers Russ (Mari), Tom (Rhonda), and Craig; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents, and cousin Jet Black.

Dear Jill and family, I got to know Curt through the Canadian flyfishing trips back in 2006 and he was great good company over the years. Very good fisherman. Always a little mischief in his eye.Scared the hell out of us when he had the stroke a few years back.If we ever get to cross the border again, I sure will miss his company. Sorry for your loss.

Curt was my Dentist for 35 years, from when I was in high school until he retired. While I can't say I enjoyed the work being done I thoroughly enjoyed every visit to his office. His personality, humor, and banter made him so much fun to be around. He was always also a good customer, fellow Kiwanian, and friend. He will be missed. My prayers for comfort are with the entire family.

I was shocked when I heard Curt had passed. I loved him so much and gave each other a bad time every trip to the dentist. I threatened to bite off his fingers if he yelled one time at his dental assistant. I felt so sorry for her. Prayers are with family and friends during their time of grief. RIP my friend.

Jill, Kai, Mandi, and Scotty

I was so sorry to hear of Curt’s passing. Not only was he our family dentist, he was a great friend, and the best business partner anyone could have. For many years, it was our Thursday ritual of going to the noon Kiwanis lunch and meeting, to which we were usually running a bit late. Curt will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace. Thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Jill and family,
I saw this and it made my heart hurt. Curt was such an awesome man and dentist. I almost cried when he retired. Back in 1977 I lost a couple fillings the same night. Curt was fairly new in town so I called and made and appointment. He did some dental work and told me I was probably pregnant (I had no idea) and he wouldn’t do X-rays. A few weeks later I was back for my new caps and by then I had confirmed I was pregnant. Lol. He made our trips to the dentist fun and he was always interested in what was happening with us
I am so sorry for your loss. Prayers for all.

Hard to put to words how Plentywood kid bond. It’s different, I think. Playing Little League with Curt. Hanging together and sharing experiences that others might not think were anything to reminisce. Compadres growing up. Last time we got together was our 50th. I didn’t recognize him at first and he expressed to me his disappointment very clearly. I was embarrassed, and I think he rubbed it in a little. I deserved it of course, He really hadn’t changed much. Even after 50 years! RIP my friend.

Dear Jill and family...my heart goes out to you all...Curt was a fine man and a friend. When we were both working at West Side, he would always tease me about being old. I told him he would always be older than me. His bd on the 23rd and mind on the 21st. And we would always get a good laugh. Curt will live on in our memories and just know you are all in my prayers.
