Dennis Fay “Denny” “Red” Albrecht.
On the morning of Wednesday July 8, 2020, Denny passed away at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive, Montana due to illness after an over year and a half stay at that facility. Dennis had recently celebrated his 71st birthday.
Dennis was born in the Sidney Community Memorial Hospital, of Sidney, Montana on June 18, 1949. He was the first child to Charles and Marian Albrecht.
In his younger years he worked as a farm and ranch hand. After his graduation in Sidney High School, he enlisted into the United States Navy. He spent four and half years as a Boatswain’s Mate, eventually being offered (and finally declining) Petty Officer Second class just prior to his honorable discharge. While on orders to the USS Constellation (CV-64) he traveled twice into the Vietnam Area of Responsibly. Among his duties were piloting the Commanding Officer’s boat and also being in command of a Mike Boat .
After his naval service he moved back to Sidney where he managed the VFW post #4099, worked the oilfields, and was a farmer/rancher. In 1973 he married and within six years he had two sons. During his sons’ participation in 4-H he took up leadership in the organization, that continued after their leaving. Many Richland county youths have benefited by his shooting sports tutelage.
Dennis was known for his voracious reading appetite. While it was true he would read any magazine or book when all other reading material had been depleted, his favorite categories had the themes: guns, cars, and westerns. Other hobbies included racing cars, watching movies (primarily westerns), listening to 60’s rock music, and playing almost any card game known to mankind. One last overlapping hobbies was trading guns with other Montanans since he had a Federal Firearms selling license.
He was always interested in fishing and hunting. He was taken on his first hunting outing by his dad while only months old. His love of fishing led him to build his own flat bottom boat to use in the family lake. He spent hours hunting after deer, antelope, assorted varmints, and game birds. Fishing was an outing to be conducted against the smallish bluegills to the region’s heavy weights, the paddlefish. He endured all of Montana’s weather from the hottest days of Indian summers in pursuit of game birds to the frozen windblown days of ice fishing.
Dennis was preceded in death by his wife and his father.
Dennis is survived by his mother, his brother, his sister-in-law, two sons, and a grandson.
