Rocky L. Norby
July 29, 1954 - May 29, 2020

Place of Birth: Sidney, MT
Residence: Sidney, Montana
Age: 65

Rocky Lee Norby was born on July 29, 1954 to Richard and Doris Norby. He was a great big brother to Rick and Jodene, there are many stories of how he picked on them as much as possible.
He grew up in the Crane area and graduated from Sidney High School in 1972. He started farming with his dad in 1974 which proved to be a lifelong career. Rocky would tell you, you have to be stupid to farm, but he loved it.
Rocky met the love of his life, Lori, on a dirt road leading to his home, where he left her with an armload to carry, not even offering her a ride. There must have been a spark because they married in 1979 and soon welcomed their children Jeremy, Melissa, and Amanda. Rocky and Lori cherished their children and were proud supporters of everything they did.
Rocky would complain mightily over all the tasks with family and friends that took him away from the farm but he truly enjoyed being there. He was the foreman for lefse making, the chief for the cleaning crew, the chaperone at all the concerts, the chauffeur for all trips, because the Boss (Lori) made him.
Once the kids graduated and moved out of the house, Rocky and Lori started traveling. Highlights included fishing trips to Alaska, concerts with their kids, cruises with their friends, sports with his boys, and a large family vacation to Disney World. Rocky loved his hunting trips with his friends and all of the men in his family.
Rocky was an amazing Dad and Papa; he attended every event he was able to and could always be heard in the stands. He coached many kids and numerous basketball teams. He was a proud Papa shark at the swim meets and cheered proudly for every race. Rocky loved taking his grandkids with him on the farm and teaching them everything he could.
He started every day with a phone call to Mandy, followed by breakfast at Sunny's. There will be many silent phones now, as Rocky never put his down. He touched lives all over the world through the various people that have been a part of Norby Inc.
Rocky always had room in his heart for every person he met. He saw the best in everyone and made many friends that way. Rocky loved to go to Las Vegas and knew all of dealers and players at the table.
Rocky was taken from us suddenly on May 29, 2020 doing what he loved. He may be gone but his work ethic and generosity will live on through those who have been a part of his life. His last words were "Catch up with me down the road", and we all look forward to that reunion.
Rocky is survived by his wife, Lori; his kids Jeremy and Lorilee Norby and their children Ella, Ave, and Beckett; Melissa and Kirk Sanders and their children Hunter, Madycen, and Jaxcen; and Mandy and Tyler Malkuch and their children Ozzy and Ziggy; Matt and Teresa Stedman and their children Bryndi, Briar, Baylor; his brother Rick Norby, and sister Jodene (Todd) Bryngelson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his close friend Henrik Larson.

I will always remember our family visits, our meals we all ate together, the respect you showed your parents, the love for the farm and animals. The kindness and patience you had as we where young kids bugging you to play with us or to get a horse ready to ride. I thank you "Rocky" for those simple years of our youth. May God be with your family now and may He comfort them in this time. Connie Norby Kilroy

Laurie and families,
Where to begin? All of you are such amazing people, and I include Matt in the family of course. Rocky had a spirit of one that’s not seen every day. He was a kind man, honest, and had a heart of gold. He told you honestly how he thought and felt without being dishonest, but yet, not hurting anyone’s feelings either, I watched him at the scale house discipline drivers without them even knowing they had gotten hit between the eyes! They all loved him. If any of them were short on money, he helped them out. What a boss! And his FAMILY!! Oh my gosh, his family was everything to him! We had (I) had hours of listening about the grown children and the grandchildren!! And loved it!! Then he had to listen about mine ?? I am going to miss him at the scale so much! I Love you all! God Bless my Norby Family!!

Lori and family, please accept my most sincere condolences for this tragic loss. No words will ever do justice or efficiently express my appreciation for all that he did for me. He was a gentle, caring, energetic and hardworking man. No matter the time of day or circumstances we met in, he always had a contagious smile. I am honored and blessed to have known Rocky and to be able to call him a friend. Although this earth has lost a noble and great man, the sky has gained a bright star. God Bless!

Lori, Rick , Jodene and family:
I’m so very sorry for your loss. I was devastated at the news of Rocky’s passing. I first met Lori at Sidney Senior High and Rocky when I started working at the Pizza House in my senior year. I have so many wonderful and fond memories of you Lori and Rocky. He was always so mischievous and it always seemed that when I did something stupid he would either be a witness or know someone who was a witness and he teased me about whatever I had done at the time until he witnessed another faux pas of mine. I will always remember how much he made me laugh and how he loved you so, his best friend and wife...Lori. ????????????????????

Jeremy and Lorilee (and family). I never had the pleasure of meeting your father but I know exactly what it's like to love a Montana farm man. It leaves a huge hole when they are gone. Grief and emotion will flow through you and the farm, but the memories and love will always be there. It is so hard to suddenly lose a father and especially at such a young age. You are all in my prayers.

Lori I've spent hours thinking of what to write to you, still got nothing. I don't have to tell you how special Rocky was, and how much more he had yet to achieve. His great family is the best testament to his legacy..and that legacy will complete Rocky's unfinished chores and go on to much much more.

Seems as I reflect, all our lives eventually can be viewed in phases. Childhood, elementary school, driving, high school, college maybe, working, etc. Each a stepping stone to whom we will someday become. It's these events, these passages that make us. In that light Rocky has helped shape us all!
I was part of the Heavy Chevy phase, even went to Billings with Rock when he got it... Thus I once logged countless miles riding shotgun in that Heavy Chevy and the granular details of all those weekends, road trip memories, swimming at the falls, .. I realize now.. Was my youth and only fond reflections today.

You got his best phase Lori, the rest of his life. God bless you and your family. They alone will surely fill your next phase and since we can never make sense of these tragedies, all we can do is hug the ones we love as often as possible to avoid regret and missed opportunities. Because of your strong family, Rocky will live forever

Sadly we are not able to travel. This will be regrettable, as there is no place I'd rather be. He deserves that from me. Stay in touch and love your people.

Dear Lori. I met you and Rocky the first time back in 1981, when I came to Sidney as an exchange student to work for the other farming legend Ike Rambur. I spent a lot of time together with Rocky, and I will always remember his smile and patience. We often went hunting together and it was always a lot of fun to be together with Rocky. Rocky ended up to become the biggest farming legend of Sidney and probably of all Montana, and it was a big chock for me to hear about his accident while he was doing what he loved the most - farming. I will always keep the best memories of Rocky. Thank you for your friendship. Torben

Dear Norby Family,
Oh my, I wept when reading this, although I've never met Rocky. I was one of the 64 passengers, who along with Amtrak crew, was on the track that collided with Rocky and the tractor. We were all treated so well by the amazing EMTs and many more from the Culbertson area, who took us to the high school. Many of us wondered about and mourned the person (unknown to us at the time) who died. On my way back home, after visiting my son in Libby, I recognized one of the car attendants on the trip out (an African American man from Chicago) and talked to him about the experience. He told me how much he appreciated the kindness of local people, and how some of them had known and told him about the beloved community member in that tractor. When I got home to Wisconsin, I found this obituary online. Rocky was surely someone I would like to have known and would have been better for knowing. I had the good fortune to grow up in a farming & logging town in NW Wisconsin, amidst lots of Norwegians, and I've put up hay, done barn chores, and eaten a lot of lefse (sometimes even when it was surrounding lutefisk). And so I mourn Rocky with at least a small sense of who he was, and I know I speak for many who were on that train in saying how sad we are that our short trip and his much longer journey converged at the same moment. -- Jim Leary
