Jerome "Jerry" David Engel
September 25, 1943 - April 20, 2020

Place of Birth: Minneapolis, MN
Residence: Ray, ND
Age: 76

Jerome “Jerry” Engel, 76 of Ray, ND, passed away Monday, April 20, 2020 at Vibra Hospital in Mandan, ND.

Jerry was born as the third of four children to Jacob Peter Engel and Norma (Raymond) Engel on September 25, 1943 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The family lived in Minneapolis until 1955, when they moved to Ray, North Dakota. Jerry graduated from Ray High School in 1961. He then attended college in Wahpeton and Williston. He worked a couple of years in the ND oilfield, before being drafted into the Army in 1965. While in the Army, he was stationed in Germany and worked as a Transportation and Movement Specialist. In 1967, he was discharged from the Army and returned home to the Ray area.

In 1975, Jerry married Joanne Weyrauch and together they had three children. They were later divorced.

Over Jerry’s remaining working years, he was back in the oilfield and related industries, including title searching, roustabouting, security and sales in Williston, Tioga and Ray. He also was an agricultural loan officer for Williston Cooperative Credit Union for 4 years and worked at both the State and County Economic Development for 8 years, working with small businesses to help them with financial needs.

In 1995, the same year his oldest daughter graduated from high school, Jerry earned his certificate from the University of North Dakota-Williston in Small Business Management.

From 1999 until his retirement in 2008, Jerry worked as the Director of Region One Senior Services and Williams County Council on Aging. He worked at the office in Williston, but also assisted our surrounding communities with their outreach, meal and transportation programs. He still enjoyed working with the members of the Heritage Center in Williston and the surrounding areas.

Jerry loved antique cars and classic muscle cars (especially Mustangs - of any year!), fishing, canoeing, photography and Nascar. He raced stock cars locally in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. He was very organized with our family history and has binders full of information for us to trace our roots and our extended family back several generations. He was a member of the Legion Post #9, the Moose Club, Basin Kruzers, Upper Missouri Camera Club, Ray Community Development Corporation and many, many others over the years.

He is survived by his children, Lisa Engel and her fiancé, Shawn Ehlke, and daughters Alexia Pitman and Kylie Ehlke; Paula Bergstrom and her husband, Travis; and Peter Engel. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Dale Ruehle, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Welcoming him in Heaven are his parents, Jacob and Norma Engel, his brothers James Engel and Paul Engel and his sister, Patricia Ruehle, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.

My parents lived next door to Jerry for many years, (Keith and Jean Kellar) Jerry was so good to my folks, shoveling snow, helping around their house. He will be sadly missed.

So very sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. We were looking forward to our next visit. Our connection was through business, museum and church. When Jerry attended Sat nite Mass at St Thomas, he always sat behind us, so of course we had to have a brief visit after. He was always interested in our museum and was looking forward to seeing our new facility. He will be missed. Hold the memories close. Blessing to all the family.

Jerry and I went to school together, and then I didn't see him until I started taking my mom to the senior center

for different activities. We could always have a laugh about things that happened "when we were young." Sorry to hear of his passing.

First of all Jerry, thank you soooooo much for your service to your country. I know you were a very proud Veteran. God Bless You. I have so many fond memories of you from when I was in high school. You had the "coolest car" in Ray at the time, your blue Mustang. You would let some of us cruise Main with you, what fun memories. You were very kind to me, I might be walking home from somewhere and you would offer me a ride home. I was always grateful for your thoughtfulness. Sending love, thoughts, and prayers to your entire family in the days ahead. I know they will cherish each and every special memory they have of you. Rest in Peace Jerry. Ray, ND will definitely miss you.

Jerry was a dear friend to me we chatted every morning over coffee maybe 5 min maybe hrs. He was a very wise man and always had a listening ear. Very kind and loved his Savior which we talked about the Blessings and God sightings in his life. He was always there if Ron or anyone needed a hand. He just would go to and fro but always would take the time to chat. We became very good friends to his cooking skills( which lead to be desired) he’d always ask if he could do this or that to his meals to his military years, paperboy yrs, and talked about his family roots to his roots in the town of Ray which he highly cherished. He loved his children and his grand children and treasured the time he was able to have lunch and meet up with them in their busy lives. He never said anything harsh about any of the mishaps in his life. Even though I know he felt saddened by them. He was a humble at heart person. I/we will miss him dearly.. HERES TO YOU MY DEAR FRIEND AS I TILT MY CUP AND SIP MY COFFEE EVERY MORNING.. UNTIL we meet again... My thoughts and prayers are with his girls/fam through this difficult time in their lives. It’s never easy and they are all tough, but we do hold the HOPE in our Savior Jesus Christ as we pass to spend eternity with Him and our families/friends. And for that I’m am eternally Grateful.
