Daniel Luther Rootes
June 13, 1950 - February 24, 2020

Place of Birth: Hibbing, MN
Residence: Miles City, MT formerly of Sidney, MT
Age: 69

Daniel Rootes passed away peacefully with his wife, daughter and son-in-law by his side on February 24th, 2020 in Billings, Mt.
Dan was born on June 13th, 1950 in Hibbing, MN. He grew up in Kitzville and later attended high school in Hibbing, where he excelled in academics and music. It was here that he met his future wife, Sue. Sue and Dan were united in marriage on February 7th, 1970. Shortly after, he joined the Army. During his enlistment he proudly served in Vietnam. Upon returning stateside, he worked as a mechanic for J&L Steel on the Iron Range and as an insurance salesman for Mutual of Omaha in Grand Rapids. Spurred by a desire for change, he left his beloved Minnesota and moved to Sidney, MT where he began a long career at Holly Sugar. He worked hard, eventually moving up to Maintenance Supervisor. In 1999, Dan medically retired following a stroke. Dan and Sue moved to Glyndon, MN, where they resided for several years before he moved into the Veterans Home in Glendive. Later he moved to the Veterans Home in Miles City, where he resided at the time of his passing.
Dan enjoyed fishing, playing guitar and singing with Sarah, bird hunting on the backroads of Minnesota, camping with the family, woodworking, listening to the Twins, watching the Vikings, handing out candy, calling Bingo, volunteering at the soup kitchen, and advocating for fellow veterans. His greatest joy came from time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Ardelle and Luther Rootes, and siblings Carol and Kim.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Rootes of Fargo, ND, children Dan (Kristal) Rootes of Elko New Market, MN, Jennifer (Dan) Rootes of Fargo, ND, Jason (Michelle) Rootes of Wasilla, AK, Sarah (Nick) Hegel of Beach, ND, and grandchildren Victoria, Alexandria, Patrick, Lindsay, Cash, Linken, Lukas, and Lizzie.

Prayers to Dan's family. Glad he is able to rest easily and be able to smoke and have a drink when he wants. He was a good guy and a hoot when we were both at EMVH .
