June 28, 1922 - January 17, 2020

Place of Birth: Blaisdell, North Dakota
Residence: Stanley, North Dakota
Age: 97

Mildred Solberg, 97 of Stanley, ND, passed away Friday, January 17, 2020 at the Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley.

Mildred was born on her parent’s farm five miles SW of Blaisdell, ND, on June 28, 1922 to Helga and George Peterson, being the fifth of seven children.

She attended school in Blaisdell through the eleventh grade, then graduated from Stanley High School with the class of 1940. After graduating she worked for Harold and Mary McAlmond and also attended Minot Normal School (now Minot State University) for a quarter in 1941.

On June 30, 1942, Mildred married Torval Solberg also from the Blaisdell area. It was a double wedding ceremony with her new sister-in-law, Edith Solberg Aas and her new brother-in-law Brunell Aas at Shell Creek Lutheran Church, north of Plaza. Torval and Mildred began their married life on a farm south of Blaisdell where they farmed grains and milked fifteen cows by hand. On August 2, 1943, they were blessed with a daughter, Diane. Their second daughter, Arlyss, was born on September 20, 1947 and this completed their family. In 1950 the family moved to the Solberg homestead where they were grain farmers until retirement in 1980. In the fall of 1956 the family moved to Stanley so their daughters could attend school but they returned to the farm each spring. This event continued until the early 1970’s when Torval and Mildred made Stanley their permanent home.

Mildred lived in Mountrail County her entire life and after Torval passed away she was able to remain in her home until 2003 when she moved to the Wilson Apartments. In March, 2015 Mildred became a resident of the Mountrail Bethel Home. She was a life-long member of Shell Creek Church.

Over the years she enjoyed gardening, playing cards and games with family and friends, dancing, and spending lots of time baking goodies. She was an avid reader most of her life and enjoyed many a game of Rummikub with her good friend Marie Roise. She worked on and completed hundreds of jigsaw puzzles and thousands of crossword puzzles and her good memory and independence remained with her to the end.

Mildred is survived by daughter, Arlyss (Dave) Skari, Las Cruces, NM; six granddaughters, Dori (Pat) Smith, Marcy (Dennis) Marston, Timi (Vern) Swenson, Shari Davis, Jodi Aune, Heather (Perry) Stephens; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Allan Aune; sisters-in-law, Faye Peterson, Thelma Solberg, Gertrude Hovda; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Torval (March 2, 1987); daughter, Diane Aune (June 29, 2005); sisters, Myrtle Sahleen, Gladys McAlmond and Thelma Smeland; brothers, Chris, Martin and Allen Peterson; granddaughter; Kirstin Skari (July 10, 1999); great-grandson, Jacob Babella (1996); niece, Barbara McAlmond Altstatt and nephews, George Solberg and Ron Smeland.
