Jill Ellen Herreid
July 31, 1963 - July 9, 2018

Place of Birth: Williston, North Dakota
Residence: Williston, North Dakota
Age: 54

Jill Ellen Herreid, 54, of Williston, ND, passed away Monday, July 9, 2018 at her residence in Williston, ND. Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Williston is assisting the family.

Jill Ellen Herreid was born the youngest to Arvie and Alvera Herreid on July 31,1963 in Williston, ND. In the time Jill spent on earth, she lived a very full and active life. Being a lifelong resident of Williston, Jill graduated from Williston Senior High School with the class of 1981 and then continued her education at UND-W where she graduated with her associates degree in business and computer science. Upon graduating Jill was able to follow in her father’s footsteps taking his place at Conlin’s Furniture/Budget Home Furnishings as their bookkeeper/office manager. During those 30+ years of employment, Jill established lifelong memories and friendships.

All through Jill’s education she participated in athletics which included basketball, track, and softball. She was an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Jill never did anything half-hearted. She excelled as an athlete and enjoyed many years of comradery with all her teammates in whatever sport she was involved in. Jill was especially skilled in softball and participated in many tournaments local and statewide.

She enjoyed various outdoor activities as she always preferred dirt over pavement. Some of her favorite past times were snowshoeing, skiing, backpacking, fly fishing, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, rock climbing, snorkeling and surfing. Always the traveler, Jill enjoyed these various activities in places like the Beartooth Mountains of Montana, Key West, Florida, the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Big Island of Hawaii, among many others. Everywhere she went she made lifelong friends.

Jill’s heart was so big, it is hard to put into words just how much she meant to anyone and everyone who was lucky enough to meet her. She was known for her selfless giving nature, her kindness and compassion, her ability to have fun, and to always make you feel welcome no matter who you were or your circumstances. There are so many people that looked up to Jill and whom she helped at various times in their lives. She was always there to listen and to give a hug that uplifted your soul. Her smile and knee-slapping laughter were contagious. She was a very hard worker, spiritual, and had a childlike curiosity about life. Jill loved all children and they loved her. Family and friends meant everything to Jill. We were all blessed with Jill singing to us, “Have I told you lately that I love you.”

People were not Jill’s only love in life. She shared a deep personal relationship with nature and animals. She found great peace and spirituality in the rhythm of the earth and all its elements. Animals always had a way of finding a home with Jill. She had a habit of filling bird feeders, feeding deer, and took in many strays over the years.

Jill is preceded in death by her parents, Arvie and Alvera Herreid, her oldest brother, Terry (Herreid) Hammond, and her brother in-law Paul Van Allen.

She is survived by her brother Glenn (Linda) Herreid of Georgia, her sisters Lana (Rick) Ensrud of Minnesota, Trudy Van Allen of Williston, Patti (Steve) Ogurchak of Williston and her partner Lynn Thomas of Williston, as well as all her nieces, nephews, and great nephews whom she loved dearly.
Jill was fearless. She lived her life by the mantra “Do one thing every day that scares the hell out of you”.

Jill, “Have we told you lately that we love you!”

My sincerest condolences to Jill's family. A quick Jill story: In winter 1989 I was living alone (and lonely) in Florida. Friends at Mingles bar decided to call me and I talked with Jill on the phone. She followed up with a Christmas card and a note to cheer me up. She was always thinking of others, ready to listen and quick with a smile. Every time I would run into her in Williston I would think back to that sweet gesture and how much it meant to me at the time. She will be missed.

I was so very shocked and sad to hear of Jill’s passing. I knew Jill since high school. I will cherish the many many years of softball we played together. Both as teammates and rivals. She taught us how to make “blacktail sleugh” in the parking lot of the softball fields. And we all took turns swirling that tin can around until frost developed on the outside of the can!! Then it was “ready “. She was a genuine friend, had an awesome smile, and was so very funny!!! She always had a great Jill hug every time I saw her. And one day we will meet again on that diamond in the sky!! RIP Jill. My prayers are with the family.

To all the family and friends of Jill. This is the most shocking news I have heard fro a long time. Jill always had such a bright smile and laugh that could brighten and light up the world. You could go years with out talking and then see her and the welcome hug and smile you received and picked up where you left off years prior. So many good memories of "those girls" on summer trips to Williston. May the many memories help ease the pain in the days ahead fro all of Jill family and friends. RIP Jill, till we meet again.

In reading through this guestbook, almost everyone mentions Jill’s smile, she always seemed to be happy and carefree. It makes me sad to think that she struggled with depression and there are so many people that loved and admired her so very much. Rest in God’s peace, Jill! To her family - gain strength with each hug you receive and with every prayer offered up in your name!

Every once in a while, a life is given to us that allows us to see more than our ordinary, everyday world that seems boring if not totally beige in color. That life was Jill. She gave our lives a much needed boost of color, being brilliant to those of us who knew her. She challenged our ordinary days with a joy, a joke, or the much needed hug. She allowed us to think beyond our traditional boundaries. She lived her life as she desired thus giving us a reason to be happy or to think in a new way. She brought us life and joy, but most importantly gave us color in our lives. We are not given many people like Jill in our lives, but it was an honor to have her in my life. I will cherish the color she has given to my life as she has now become a blessed memory. May her memory last as long as the rock that I will place on her final resting place, knowing that the memory of her the form a pebble will last longer than I will be alive.
