Kip Alden Blackhawk, age 37 from Mandaree, ND, passed away at his mothers residence in New Town, North Dakota on August 21, 2017. Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Watford City is assisting the family.

Kip Alden Black Hawk was born on January 19, 1980 at Watford City, North Dakota. He was an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes, a member of the Water Buster Clan and a child of the Prairie Chicken Clan. The Mandaree community and Saddle Butte area is where he spent his entire life. He was baptized and confirmed at Independence Congregational Church and presently served as the Vice President of the church board. Due to increased health issues, he was unable to continue working; but was the sole caregiver for his mother, making sure that she made her dialysis appointments three times a week at 5:30 am.

While in high school Kip was a member of the Mandaree High School Indian Club which included traditional singing as part of the curriculum and he later joined the drum group “Thunder Butte” which was formed by the late Lyle Walking Hawk. Kip traveled and sang with the drum group for a number of years, along with Blaine and Marty Fredericks. With permission from Grandpa Kingden, Kip was granted the use of Fred Black Hawk’s traditional Hidatsa adult name, “Good Hawk”. The naming ceremony was performed by Warren Wolf.

Kip spent his early teen years working at the family store, D&D Quick Stop. He graduated from Mandaree High School May 2000 and that Fall registered at Williston State College, completing one semester. Kip worked as a Security Guard at the 4- Bears Casino for over five years. In 2003 he attended the ND Police Academy and successfully completed all required courses and began work as a TAT Game Warden for a period of time, before transferring to TAT Law Enforcement. He worked as a Police Officer and Correctional Officer. Kip took a food safety training session and became the head cook with the Mandaree Elder Mealsite in 2012. September – October 2013, Kip drove to Fargo, ND (weekly) to attend truck driving school, he completed the course and obtained a CDL (11-05-2013). Being able to drive 18 wheelers brought him great pride and joy.

Being an only child, Kip referred to his cousins, Jennifer Driver, Joni Little Swallow Cadotte and Bernadine Fredericks Mendez as “Sisters”. Fredericks boys, Moberg boys, and Calvin Black Hawk, he referred to as “Brothers”. Sierra Little Swallow joined the household in 1998 and was raised as his little sister. Kip married Delta Blaine August 31, 2003, and were blessed with Barnabus Anthony on November 10, 2012. He was a very admirable father who loved his little family very much.

Outdoor activities, swimming, fishing, and hunting were among his favorite hobbies. Cooking was also a favorite pastime, barbequed ribs or brisket was his specialty. Celebrating the 4th of July at the lake with the entire “Black Hawk” gang was among Kip’s happiest memories.

Good Hawk is survived by: wife, Delta, son; Barnabus, mother; Dinah Black Hawk, all of Mandaree, North Dakota, little sister; Sierra Rose Little Swallow, nephew; Tian Roberts, aunts; Fay (Lary) Moberg, Keene, North Dakota, Judy Black Hawk, New Town, North Dakota, JoAnn (Randy) Keehn, Williston, North Dakota, along with numerous cousins.

We are sorry to hear about your loss. Sickness has robbed us of our loved ones resulting in their death. May these scriptures bring you all comfort. Isaiah 33:24 promises ,"And no resident will say: “I am sick.” The people dwelling in the land will be pardoned for their error." When Jesus was on earth he healed the sick and raised the dead. At John 11:25 "Jesus said to her: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life." What a wonderful hope we can look forward to and may God strengthened you in the days ahead.

They are no words that I can say that express the knowledge of me knowing how you would feel in this difficult time. But the Bible gives us hope of the resurrection of the dead. In Revelation 21: 4 shows us that hope, "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
