My favorite photo of Joshua, he just looks so cool!
Josh was my little brother. He was an old soul, he loved Jazz and Swing from the 1940s. He would write these short stories that would just amaze you. I loved him, I will miss him for the rest of my life.

I have known the Smallwood family for over 25 yrs, and I have been blessed to have taught many of the kids in this family. Every single one of them were unique and brought so much life to whatever they did and accomplished. Joshua was so special, he was such a wonderful young boy who grew into a wonderful young man. He was very talented, somewhat soft spoken at times, and had a great heart, just like his mom, dad, and siblings. I will cherish the memories I have of him as a young boy, and also as a big brother to his little brother Jamie. Joshua might have left this earth too soon, but we can honor his memory and never forget the amazing person he became. May you rest in peace in the presence of our Lord. May eternal light shine upon you <3

He would never let me take photos of him
I loved my brother. I used to take him to dinner for his birthday; chevys and olive garden, and I would tell the waitperson that is was his birthday, and they would sing and he would get so embarassed. He would talk alot, tell stories, talk about his dreams of being a director, a writer, make movies, war films, everything. His big dreams made you want to think and dream big. He was so inspiring. He would tell me about the movies he was working on, or the stories he was writing. I loved him so much. He was a collector, and one day he brought a bag of movies and dvd's to my apartment to hold, and inside one of the bags was a helmet from some war. Its was so heavy, and I was like "why does this kid have a helmet." When he lived in SF, every time he had a place to live, I went and visited him. He was always welcome at my apartment, and would come over, sit in my chair, lean back cross his leg over, cross his arms and chat. I remember how proud I was to go with him shoe shopping for his first real job at the movie theater. He was so kind that he wanted a cheap pair from payless. I remember standing there while he looked for black boots for his big feet. He had really big feet. I hated that he was taller then me. He had a beautiful smile, a half smirk, it was so sarcastic, and witty. We didnt talk much the last few years, but everytime we spoke I told him I loved him. We were talking about me taking the train up to visit him in Montana this summer. I was hoping to go in August, and I was starting to figure out routes for my train adventure, I was planning a stop in Sidney to visit him. I always thought he would be here. I never thought he would be gone so soon. Josh, you will be missed. You will be missed. Your talent, your humor, your laugh, your deep voice, your stories, your modesty around your family, your adventures with women, and how sharp you dressed all the time. You were such a sharp dresser. You will always be missed. My brother. My little brother. I love you. Bye Bye Blackbird. Rest easy bro. Rest easy.

Josh's Press Pass for the Trump Jr. Event
I had the honor of meeting Josh while we were cast in a local play together. Josh was such a talented guy. Not only could he act with the best, but he could sing and play piano. Two favorites from the 30's/40's era that he sang especially beautiful were "A Little on the Lonely Side" and "As Long As I Live". He was also an extremely gifted writer and he showcased his talents as a reporter at the RoundUp. His story about our library was picked up by two different statewide publications. The photo I selected is actually a copy of his press pas. He was chosen to cover the Donald Trump Jr./Gianforte rally and he was so excited to get this pass. He gave it to me as a momento. There will never be another like you Josh. You are loved and will be missed forever.

Josh joined Sidney, MT's MonDak Writers group in 2016 and consistently wowed everyone of us with his stories, passion for writing, and love of music. One of the most talented young writers I've ever had the privilege to read and hear, he will be missed. Really missed. My condolences to his family and loved ones. He was a remarkable man.

"Joshua" When I first met Josh, He was pretty much done on his luck. Coming to North Dakota to make it rich, he found out that is was a little tougher than that. My brother and I noticed something special in Josh so I moved him into a camper in my yard and supplied him with work. Josh became a part of my family. I have watched Josh go through so much and I have seen him conquer his problems and grow. We became his Montana family. He also not only gained us but he gained many other friends and family, Eva, Mary and many others that really cared for Josh. He will truly be missed
