Sylvia Leone Leiseth
July 7, 1945 - November 11, 2019

Residence: Watford City, ND

Sylvia Leone Leiseth was born July 7, 1945 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Williston, North Dakota to Clarence and Julia (Austad) Leiseth. She was named for one of her mother’s piano teachers. She spent her very early years on a farm south of Arnegard and attended grades one and two in Arnegard. The family moved to Watford City in 1953 where Sylvia attended school graduating in 1963. She attended Dickinson State Teachers college for one year. Recognizing her amazing artistic ability, her parents sent her to an art school in Omaha, Nebraska for three years. Her art works from this period were highly detailed and realistic—what a gift! (Too bad her bedroom was not a reflection of her attention to detail.)

Sylvia returned to Watford City where she became an integral part of the city. She served for many years as curator of the McKenzie County Museum where she had an opportunity to educate visitors to the history of McKenzie County, its people and events. She was a janitor at the First International Bank for a short time and then at the Watford City Post Office. She LOVED her job at the post office because she could visit with the people and share her jokes! Even after being somewhat disabled with her rheumatoid arthritis, she continued with her cleaning chores and her happy disposition.

Sylvia spent many years babysitting for families. She touched the lives of many, many children. In later years she was a live-in companion and house keeper for numerous senior citizens.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the First Lutheran Church Bell Choir, Women of the ELCA, Hope Circle, and served a three year term on the church council. She was also a member of the Watford City Community Theater.

Sylvia was a learner. She was trained as a Bethel Series instructor and many people enjoyed her classes. Her students were impressed with her knowledge and insight. She studied Norwegian. She was a formidable competitor in trivial pursuit. It was best to be on her team. (Her library must contain hundreds of books of trivia and jokes.)

Sylvia had many more talents. She, of course, played piano (it was a given in our upbringing). She could read music but found it much easier to play by ear.

As a freelance artist she painted murals in many store windows for the holidays. She was most proud of the huge mural she painted on one wall of the First Presbyterian Church. She also illustrated the North Dakota State Elementary Music Curriculum in July of 1971.

Sylvia is remembered for her many years of hosting a yard party and she invited EVERYONE. A highlight of her life was a surprise 50th birthday party in her honor!

Sylvia is survived by her sisters Julie Claire Schwartz and her husband Bruce, Marcia Hansen, Sharon Waterman; nieces Kelley Berger, Randi Hanson, Kristin Oban, Kimberly Hemphill; nephews Doran Schwartz and Jason Knudson; numerous grand nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Julia Leiseth; niece Kayla Curtis; grand nephew Shawn Oban, Junior (infant); and brother-in-law Howard Hansen.

It was Sylvia’s desire that her body be donated to the University of North Dakota for medical research. Her remains will be interred near her paternal grandparents at the Zoar Cemetery at a later date.

The family wishes to thank everyone for being her friend, (putting up with her endless jokes) and for your many acts of kindness and love. Most important to Sylvia was helping people, making herself useful and making people happy. It is her hope that her funeral is a joyous celebration of her earthly life!

"Our Sylvia" was a community member who was just a part of who we are pre-boom. We would see her anytime of the year, moving about town with her scooter which had the high orange flag on it, day or night. I was a sole student of hers in her Bethel Bible class and she was a very patient and thorough teacher, drawing from an astounding number of bibles that she knew very well.

As we all knew, when we would run into her, she'd have a joke, humorous anecdote, or story to tell and she loved the years she organized block parties and invited everyone she saw.

The church was really her home and she was always ready to pitch in on a project or meeting.
In her unwavering faith she has always known the blessing of where she was ultimately heading.

Rest well, "Our Sylvia".

What a gal! She will be greatly missed by everyone. I was so sad in hearing her passing. She always had such a big smile on her face what one remembers the most of her. Every time I enter the Post Office I think of what it looked like back when she worked there. Never has looked the same such a shame. She was great there always greeting everyone with a smile and a joke or two and melted it clean! When I was working at the nursing home she taught me a lot of her Christian views which I will always treasure! She was a community gem for sure!!

We lived close to Leiseth's and Sylvia would stop at our house and draw for us! She was the most interesting person to me as young child! Sharon we were good friends and you spent time with me at the farm & you came to Williston & stayed with us! All good memories. Sylvia was so good about calling my mom Ruth and inviting her to the picnic and just visiting with her! I'm sure you all have wonderful memories and they will live on! God Bless you & yours at this time.

Growing up at First Lutheran in WC was amazing with Sylvia around. From bell Choir to Sunday School and everything in between she was a true servant of God. I was lucky to get to know her and appreciate her many talents. That sense of humor being my favorite talent. Glad she is in God’s arms again! My sincere gratefulness to God and her family for sharing her with us all!

In AZ now, but remembering Silvia's contributions to our community in Watford City. We especially appreciated her mural at the Presbyterian Church; we were there when she told the stories. We will also remember her musical contributions to the "ding-a-lings". Sad to hear she is gone, but she is ringing for the Lord now. 12702

My sincere sympathy to Sylvia's family. She will be missed. I smile as I try to imagine her reaction when she entered her eternal life in heaven.

I don't know how to summarize all my wonderful memories of Sylvia into a few lines. My earliest memories are of her peddling around town on her bike with the basket.

Later, she and I spent years playing in the bell choir together. I remember Sylvia's enthusiasm in playing the biggest, bass bells. Many of them, not just one for each hand!

In recent years, she ministered to my aunt, Lillian Bergem, at the Good Shepherd Home. Sylvia made nightly visits to read to her from the bible and tuck her into bed. It touched my heart to know she was there with her.

When I think of Sylvia, the verse Philippians 4:4 comes to mind. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. How she exemplified that!

Dear Julie, Marcia, and Sharon, I am very sorry I couldn't make it to Sylvia's service. Whenever I saw her she would remind me that I was to sing for her funeral, but I was just returning from Ireland, and couldn't make it back in time. I have very fond memories of all of the Leiseth family and the musical connection. Our sympathy to all of the family. Pamela & all of the Haugans

Sylvia! A host of memories came flooding back of her and her wonderful family. She astounded me with her ability to play almost anything by ear...and her sense of humor was already well-developed in high school. Hugs to her sisters.
