Mark was my high school friend. That’s where the story started. He was kind, generous and caring. Patient and humble. He was my friend. I will miss his stories, his thoughts and his insight. But mostly, I’ll just miss him. Our thoughts are with Heather and his family.

Mark & I at Dad's last spring
Mark was my Brother and lifelong Friend.

Mark was born on September 26, 1960. Only a year and a half separated us. And all through our lives that was pretty much the only form of separation we knew. Growing up in an extremely Outdoors oriented Family was fantastic for a couple of adventurous young lads. We fished the many streams in our area together, ran our bikes everywhere, learned to hunt together, and enjoyed our childhood to the max.

Going through school only took away a little time from those activities, as we both proved to be rather good at the education game. The years streamed by, and we soon found ourselves graduated from high school, still firm and fast Buddies who continued to share their ever increasingly busy lives with each other.

Countless hunts, countless fishing trips, and a diet fueled by adventure. This Man stood beside me through thick and thin for all of our lives. And although our lives led us in different directions at times, we never lost the connection that we shared.

Mark led an interesting life: Military (Artillery Man), Law Enforcement, Heavy Equipment Operator (Mining Trucks) and finally the senior Health and Safety Officer for one of the US's larger oil and gas pipeline companies. Through that entire period, he never lost his love of all things outdoors, and we would get together as frequently as we could to share that.

Being my lifelong Friend, I am devastated by his sudden loss.

To my Brother: You were as Fine and Warm a Man as could ever be asked for in a Brother.
I will fondly cherish our many fine times together.
And I will always miss you terribly.
Say a few words of respect from me for all those you have now joined.
And save a seat for me beside your campfire my Friend for I'll be wandering along to reunite our kinship soon enough.

With Love,
Matt

I do want to say, I am going to miss him very much. He is a fantastic co-worker of mine at Crusoe. He visit very often to my jobsite to check on my team and I to ensure everything is going well including our personal life.

He is wise, smart and knowledgeable when it comes to different subjects: finances, relationships, businesses, etc. I enjoy sitting down with Mark, learning and listening from Mark and bantering with Mark. I am so saddened to hear about his sudden passing after that I had brought Tim Bits from his favorite place, Tim Hortons, just to give it to him and his wife. I wished I had spent a little more time with him. He will be missed.

Mark, I hope you rest peacefully and watching over everyone. You are a highly respectable individual that I look up to and give me inspiration to do things better. Once again, my condolences to the Stabler family, I hope the family will recover from this and moves on knowing that Mark is in a better place now.

I hope the Tim Bits I bought for you, makes it up there to you Mark. I will miss you man.

I'm Going to miss being greeted on the daily as Mark would head over to the container of Redvines we keep in the receiving area. Boy he loved them redvines and they would be like breakfast for him.
But the one thing I'll never forget is how Mark helped me personally find Peace with my oldest son not coming to live with me in North Dakota. Despite the culture difference between Williston and San Diego, Mark helped me realize that we all have one thing in common and that's Life comes with up and downs for all of us.
I consider Mark a Close friend, and I pray the Lord Brings his family the comfort that only God can provide.

It is with great sadness that our family says farewell to Mark. He was the kind of brother that you could sit and chat with forever over endless cups of coffee. He loved to tell stories and I loved to listen to them. His stories were intriguing, entertaining, and often hilarious. The children in my dayhome were fascinated by him. They look forward to his visits and collected his cop cards with great anticipation.
One time he came to visit and let his horse out on our front lawn. The neighbors and children couldn't believe their eyes! Those were just the kinds of things that happened when Mark was around. He was quite a character, at times larger than life, invincible even.
Therefore, it was quite a shock to learn he was gone in the blink of an eye.
But I know, and I'm sure you do too, that the story telling continues. He is with those friends and ancestors, who are gone but not forgotten. Sitting around that campfire Matt told you about. Telling stories, late into the night. Until we join you brother, we will be sharing your stories here and keeping your memory alive.
Love you forever,
Ruth (Ruthy to a very few, which Mark was one)

Heather, we are heartbroken for you after the sudden loss of your sweet husband and the love of your life. Mark was so full of life and love for others, most especially for you and his family.. You have been a great blessing to Mark and it's been good to see how happy you made him over the years. Surely many memories of happy days together will help you through this difficult time. We admire your strength and wish you comfort and peace moving forward. Love, Jean & John

Mark is my son and the greatest of friends.
It is extremely difficult to say goodbye to a son that I have known and loved since he took his first breath.
Mark was a happy, friendly, outgoing, generous young boy and he retained these characteristics throughout his life. As he grew up I took him fishing and as he grew into a teenager I taught him how to to hunt birds and later deer - sports that he pursued throughout his life.
When he finished high school he went to Lethbridge College and studied the law enforcement option in an environmental science program. After graduation he took a job with the Alberta Highway Patrol but the Patrol was very large and bureaucratic and Mark soon moved on to be Special Constable of Big Lakes Municipal District (in American terms this is like sheriff of Big Lakes County). He liked this job and worked at it for a couple of decades.
While he was living in Alberta, he and his family visited us in Saskatoon frequently and we visited them - usually around Canadian Thanksgiving; which coincided with Alberta's deer season and we hunted together essentially every year.
After retiring as sheriff he studied oil field safety and then took a job with A&B Pipeline, an oil and gas pipeline construction company out of Regina, Saskatchewan, where he worked for several years. After a few years A&B bought an oil and gas construction company in North Dakota, and Mark was asked to move to North Dakota and manage the safety program.
While Mark lived in Saskatchewan we visited each fall to hunt geese with him and after he moved to North Dakota, I would go and hunt deer with him. He visited us frequently in Idaho Falls while living in North Dakota.
We shared many interests - old trucks, boats, vehicles, guns - shooting, collecting, restoring... We also talked about politics, genealogy, history, travel, the military, the old west, and many other topics.
In mid-life, Mark and Heather found each other and formed a very loving, respectful, caring marriage. Mark and Heather did everything together - improving their home and property, fishing and hunting, vacations to the Caribbean, visits to us in Idaho. They both found contentment, love and satisfaction in their relationship.
An unfortunate, untimely departure put all of this on hold, but I am comforted in knowing that Mark has not left us permanently, just changed addresses. We will all meet again someday and resume our journey together.
God be with you Mark - your Papa loves you all the time.
Dad

In Our Hearts

We thought of you today
But that is nothing new
We thought about you yesterday
And days before that too
We think of you in silence
We often speak your name
Now all we have are memories
And your picture in a frame
Your memory is our keepsake
With which we'll never part
God has you in his keeping
We have you in our heart

We first met Mark when Jack and Marge moved to Idaho Falls. We soon found out how much Mark loved the outdoors, We soon became friends. Mark invited me to go up to Northern Alberta and hunt whitetail deer. It was an enjoyable and memorable trip and our friendship continued to grow. (As a side note - I harvested the biggest whitetail deer I have ever harvested). When Mark and Heather moved to North Dakota, again I had the opportunity to go to their home and hunt deer and geese. It was a great trip. They opened their home and hearts to me. It is with great sadness that Mark left so soon. Our prayers are with your family at this time. He will be missed.

Larry and I are heartbroken to hear about Mark. We’ve known him from when he was a young boy. Larry and the boys had spent many days duck hunting and hunting with Mark, and have great memories from their trips. We’re kept in touch with him and watched him grow in a wonderful young man. Our hearts go out to Jack and his family.
