I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I wasn't aware he had been ill. I was Steve's fifth grade teacher at Webster School back in about 1965, so we go back a long way. Steve was such a nice young boy and he grew into a fine young man. Please accept my sincere condolences and may the memories you share bring you comfort at this difficult time

What a loss! Four years ago at this time he was helping Bob go thru his finally days with dignity and Strength! Steve had a kind soul and I will miss his phone calls and the good laughs we had! To The Family Of Steve Oyloe,
I first met Steve in grade school at Webster Elementary. The school is now gone, but the memories are still there.

We were part of the Baby Boomers, and Webster had so many kids there were 2 classes our age. We were separated alphabetically into 2 classes, but got to know each other on the playground, and after school playing sports.

The movie “Sandlot” played on TV this week, and as I watched it, I couldn’t help think of all of us kids back then. Randy Jost, Steve Marcy, Lowell Bean, Dallas Bustad, Donn Hoffelt, Dave Nelson, David Westhoff, Ronnie Shae, myself, and Steve. It was quite a crew.

After Webster, we went to Junior High, and since Steve lived on 4th Street like I did, he stopped by to get me on his way there. I was so jealous of him. He had that yellow bike with the high handlebars and the “banana” seat. He could do wheelies. I just had a regular old bike. Still have it.

We’d ride to school through the park a block from my house. Randy’s family moved to a house right across the street from the park, which had a baseball field. It was our “Sandlot”. It was the best.

Throughout grade school and junior high, and on into high school, Steve and I played sports together, both at school, and at the “Sandlot”. Steve was a hoot to be around, and I always remember his infectious laugh.

In the summers during Junior High, we’d ride bikes out to the Little Muddy River east of Williston, and catch bullheads. I remember the time we caught over 100 bullheads, and Mrs. Marcy cooked them up for us at her house.

At the time, we all hated girls. Then Teen Canteen at the Old Armory downtown changed all that. I remember the first night we went, but we were too chicken to go in because, while we started to think girls were “OK”, we didn’t know how to dance. We just peeked in through the windows.

The next day we all went to my house and tried our best to learn to dance the way we’d seen kids dance looking through the windows. We all felt like Opie Taylor the first time he went to a dance, but we eventually got the hang of it. Bean not so much.

Then came high school and cars, and Steve always had a cool car. We told our folks that we would go fishing at the River, and even brought our fishing poles and bait at first. Over time, we switched to beer, and didn’t bother with the fishing poles. A cold one with your best friends around a camp fire, telling jokes and stories, was to die for.

In High School, Bustad, and 2 new members of the the gang, Jon Hoover and Terry Haugen, were the only ones good enough to play basketball, so the rest of us would sit in the stands at Pep Rallies and Games. If you look at the cover of our High School annual, you will see Steve, Lowell Bean and I on the cover at one of those games. And the Roadtrips we took were legendary.

I think Bean and Bustad had shop class together, but Steve and I took a typing class together. What I didn’t know was that Steve also played piano. I thought I was doing good to get up to 40 words per minute typing, but Steve was pushing 100 I think. He was amazing.

In high school, cars were all important, and Steve always had a ride. He gave me and Bean and Bustad the ride of our lives racing another car down Golf Course Hill east of town one winter. At the bottom of the hill was a 90 degree left turn. Steve was gonna pass the other car, but the driver, I can’t remember who it was, wasn’t going to let him.

The other driver, laughing at us going down the hill, looked straight ahead at the upcoming curve, and when he looked back at us, we were gone. Steve took the southern ditch and made the turn in the ditch. We made the turn, but of course we were stuck in the snow. The guys in the other car helped us out, laughing in amazement at what Steve had done.

Our Senior Year, Steve, Sheryl Gunlikson, Sandra Jodock, myself and I think Sherrie Cornelius took a roadtrip with Dave Gunlikson to “look at the college”. It was a great excuse to get out of school for a few days. There was a Hwy. Patrol meeting at Bismarck, so the roads were clear. If you don’t include the 4 times we had to stop for gas, we made it in 4 hours…

One of my favorite movies, Stand By Me, says it best. “It happens sometimes. Friends come in and out of our lives, like busboys in a restaurant.” Steve went to college out of state, and after college, I moved out of state. We saw each other when I would come home to see my family, but that was only once or twice a year. But I never forgot our good times together.

When my folks moved to Bethel Home, I would make a point to see his Dad. I ran into Steve at our last High School Reunion, and heard how his Dad wrote his own obituary, “just so they wouldn’t screw it up”. Steve had his Dad’s sense of humor.

Again, I think the movie Stand By Me says it best. “I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?”
