Terrance "Terry" J. Carlsen
October 5, 1952 - January 4, 2019

Place of Birth: Wolf Point, MT
Residence: SIdney, Montana
Age: 66

Terrance “Terry” was born on October 5, 1952, in Wolf Point, MT the son of John and Phyllis (Colbert) Carlsen. He grew up and attended schools in Richey. While in high school Terry participated in high school rodeos as a saddle bronc rider. After graduation he was recruited to be one of numerous cowboys that traveled to upstate New York to work at the Dude Ranches there running horse barn and rodeoing. Terry did this for 2 years, 1972 and 1973. On his 2nd trip to New York, he met Patti Helwig. When he returned to Montana that fall, after the season was over, she followed shortly after. He continued to pursue his Bronc Riding traveling around Eastern Montana. They were married on November 30, 1974, living in Sidney for a short time before moving to Brockway to work on the Eisinger Cattle Ranch. When his father became ill, they moved back to the family farm north of Richey. While there they had two sons, Jesse and Jamie. In the spring of 1979, the family moved to Sidney and for 40 years, Terry worked in the oil field for numerous companies. In 1992, he was able to find a place outside of town to get back into his passion of horses. Terry broke and trained numerous colts and after a while he turned to team roping. He and his son, Jamie and families, were members of the Sidney Saddle Club. The next best thing to come for Terry, were his grandchildren, Ben, Abby, and Bella and Nathan and Danny. He loved playing with them and teaching them. Terry retired in early October of 2018, with plans to continue doing the things he love and spending time with his grandchildren, who meant so much to him. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving him are: his wife, Patti Carlsen, Sidney, MT; his sons, Jesse (Amy) Carlsen, Bismarck, ND and Jamie (Jennifer) Carlsen, Sidney, MT; his brothers, Jim (Jamie) Carlsen, Sidney, MT and Les (Sally) Carlsen, Circle, MT; his brother-in-law, Mike Landers, Miles City, MT; his grandchildren, Ben, Nathan, Danny, Abbigail “Abby” and Isabelle “Belle”; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, John “Jack” Carlsen and his sister, Patricia “Pat” Landers.
Terry passed away on Friday evening, January 4, 2019, while clearing trees on his land in rural Sidney.

I grew up with Jamie and Jesse and was at the Carlsen’s place a lot over the years. Terry was a good man and his opinions and thoughts always mattered to me, I never wanted to disappoint him and always looked forward to seeing what he had to say. He was always quick with smile and joke, and as a kid I wasn’t to sure if he was joking or serious. I learned a lot from him and was saddened by this news. My thoughts and prayers are with the Carlsen family ( Patty, Jesse, Jamie).
