Steve Strasser, 59, of Stanley, ND passed away unexpectedly Monday, September 24, 2018 in Stanley. Springan Stevenson Funeral Home of Stanley has been entrusted with arrangements and services.
Steve was born June 4, 1959 in Williston, North Dakota to Harold and Amy Strasser. In 1963 the family moved to Stanley when Harold became the manager of Stanley Bowling Lanes. After graduating from Stanley High School in 1977, he earned a degree in broadcasting from Brown Institute in St. Paul, MN. He worked at radio stations in Fargo, ND, Sturgis, SD and Bemidji, MN. He graduated with a B.S. degree in English from Moorhead State, and like his mother, became an English teacher. While they were both enrolled, Steve met Yvonne Van Wyhe and soon after they were married. He taught school in De Smet, South Dakota and then in Bemidji, MN. Steve later moved on to manage the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. Using his carpentry skills, he was employed building homes. In addition, he evaluated AP tests online.
Steve loved music and had been part of numerous bands since he was a teenager. His specialty was singing and playing his bass guitar. His wealth of friendships often centered around the music industry. He had a variety of other interests including trains, bowling, airplanes, gardening, writing and photography.
Known for his love of animals of all types, he and Yvonne especially were fond of their dogs and cats and any other “critters” that would wander into their yard throughout the years. Their two cats, Dutch-boy and Harvard will miss Steve greatly.
Steve was so looking forward to coming back to Stanley to manage the bowling alley, just as his dad had done 50+ years ago.
Steve is survived by his wife, Yvonne; his mother, Amy; sisters, Susan (David) Polfliet and Barbara (David) Guttormson; brother, Bill (Val) Strasser; mother-in-law, Helen Van Wyhe; brother-in-law, Bill (Shelly) Van Wyhe; sister-in-law, Heidi (Jason) Holforty, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Harold; father-in-law, John Van Wyhe; brothers-in-law, Hans and Johnny Van Wyhe.
