May 16, 1924 - September 10, 2018

Residence: formerly of Ross , more recently from Minot, ND

Joe Farhart, 94, formerly of Ross passed away surrounded by family on Monday, September 10, 2018.

Joe Farhart was born May 16, 1924 on his parent’s farm in Ross Township, North Dakota to Rosenna (Lynch) and Boaley Farhart. He was the second oldest of 11 children. Joe was a product of the Great Depression and worked hard all of his life. He worked in the coal mines in Lignite, ND to earn enough money to buy his farm. He also worked in an automobile factory in Detroit, MI and at an auto body repair shop in Williston, ND. For many years he dug water wells with his good friend and sidekick, Fred Crowder. He was an assessor for Cottonwood Township
and was on the board for the Ross Elevator.

On May 30, 1953 Joe married June Elizabeth Nielsen of Racine, Wisconsin. They resided in Williston, North Dakota for two years and then moved to a farm northwest of Stanley in 1955. They had 4 children, Steve, Cathy, Nancy and Linda. They lived on the farm until 1988 when they moved to Minot.

June died in July of 1989. Joe then retired from farming and rented out his cropland. He continued to go to the farm to work on his second passion; restoring old tractors. Over the years that he farmed, Joe raised horse, sheep and cattle and grew mainly durum wheat, oats and barley. He enjoyed playing cards, snowmobiling and hunting with another good friend, Baard Hollinger. He was a farmer until the end, asking everyday this fall if the crops were being combined and how they were doing, along with wanting to know how the hay mowing was going and the rain totals.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, June; his son, Steven; daughter, Linda Varberg; infant granddaughter, Melissa Marie Landon; his parents; brothers, Al, Moody and Denny and his sisters, Nora Smith, Anne Tharpe and Nedde Pegg.
He is survived by his daughters, Cathy ( Greg) Landon, Ryder, ND and Nancy Farhart, Minot, ND; grandchildren, Joseph (Kaela) Varberg, Shawnee, KS; Byron (Kathleen Diedrich ) Varberg, Leawood, KS; Justin Landon, Sartell, MN; Jeremy Landon, Minneapolis, MN and Chelsey Landon (Christian Gutierrez), Minneapolis, MN; his brothers, Hap, Laguna Vista, TX; sister, Rita (Frank) Terhune, Bolivar, MO, Ida (John) Brewer, Lakeway, TX and Louise ( Jim) Edland, Pilot Point, TX and many nieces and nephews.

Joe had been in hospice care for the last 2 months and passed away on September 10, 2018. The family would like to thank Trinity Hospice for the care they gave to their father.

Oh Nancy, sympathy to you and family. Big smile here when I saw Crowder name. It was perhaps Fred who was in Bethel Home in Williston back in mid 90’s. Precious memories, may they surround you.

Just learned a couple days back of Joe's passing. Sorry for your loss. Joe was a good man. Drove school bus and picked up Sharon and me for many years. The good Lord most surely is enjoying his company.
