Darlene M. Mowdy
May 11, 1932 - August 9, 2018

Place of Birth: Rural Richey, MT
Residence: Tioga, North Dakota
Age: 86

Darlene Mae Milne Mowdy, 86, peacefully passed away on August 9, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 11, 1932 to Roslyn (Tobe) William Milne and Alice Louise Karto Milne at their homestead 14 miles outside of Richey, Montana. After obtaining a degree in both art and business from Concordia College in Minnesota, she moved to Williston, North Dakota to begin her career as an art teacher. At the age of 24, Darlene settled in Tioga, North Dakota where she spent the next 61 years raising her family. Darlene paved the way as Tioga’s first high school art teacher. As she continued her high school art career, she also went on to teach photography and business classes. Darlene was not only passionate about teaching, but also about being an active member and leader of the Tioga community and state of North Dakota. She designed the Tioga Farm Festival buttons for many years and was selected as the Grand Marshall where she got to ride with Governor Ed Schafer in the Tioga Farm Festival Parade. Darlene was a devout member of the First United Methodist Church and later the First Lutheran Church, a member of the North Dakota Historical Society, Handy Mandy Homemakers, Sons of Norway and the North Dakota Mrs. Jaycees, to name a few. Darlene was a master artist, creating many works of art using all types of mediums, such as oil, pastel, water color, acrylic, pencil, pottery, weaving, beadwork and bronze. She got much of her inspiration from Native American artwork and had a special affinity for the American Bison. Her artistic talent was recognized by the state of North Dakota and her artwork displayed in the Governor’s Mansion.

Darlene also had a love of horses and the prairie. She had the wonderful opportunity to ride in both the Wyoming and Montana Hundred Year Trail Rides. These two experience were some of the best of her life. While she eventually retired from teaching high school art, photography and business, she never stopped teaching. She went on to teach many adult art classes and became her grandchildren's private art teacher. Darlene shared her passions and wisdom with all.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, RW (Tobe) and Alice Milne; sister Diane (Milne) Baumunk and brother-in-law Ralph Baumunk; brother Delford Milne.

She is survived by her daughters Michele Lynn Mowdy and Roberta Lesli Mowdy; son Joel Carlton Mowdy and wife, Stephanie Mowdy; grandchildren, Will Cook, Frances Cook, Hannah (Whiting) Robson, Meghan (Whiting) Boone, Jesse Mowdy, Danaka Mowdy, Kalli Mowdy; sister-in-law Debbie (Arnold) Milne; niece Robyn (Milne) Wilkinson; nephew Max Milne.

Darlene was the start of my art career as her student in my sophomore (1955) year at Williston High School. Becoming a farm and ranch wife In rural Williston in 1960 we connected many times one of which I judged her artwork at the Farm Festival in Tioga. I got to visit her in her home about a year and a half ago where we had lunch and shared out pasts. Darlene was a beautiful person inside and out. I will miss her being in my life. My prayers are with her family.

What a wonderful legacy she left her family and this community. We enjoyed so many lively conversations about most anything! She will be missed by me and also within our Tioga Historical Norseman Museum. Hold the memories close.

To the Darlene Mowdy family
Mrs Mowdy was a wonderful teacher and beautiful all around person. Loved being in her classroom. She challenged you to expand your thinking outside of the box. I will miss seeing her on occasion with that loving smile and kind words of How are you? Thoughts and prayers to all

Darlene and her art classes remain high on my list of cherished memories. During my very awkward years of junior high I finally found something I was good at and loved to do and kept taking more classes. She encouraged me and eventually I found a career in the field of design. She was always great at keeping calm even with so many rambunctious kids - I’m not sure how she put up with us all :)

I had her for art class in 1973 and 1974. She was absolutely the best teacher.. I didn't think I could draw. But she taught me otherwise. She was definitely the best at everything. We will absolutely miss her..luv her

Michele, Roberta and Joel, I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. I have many fun memories spending time with your family while growing up next door. She was a very intelligent and talented lady! She was also very patient, teaching many of us kids how to ride and care for horses. Cherish the memories as they wil help you get through this difficult time. My sympathies to you and your families. Love and hugs, Nancy Iverson Connelly

I am so sorry for the loss of this great lady. I had the honor of knowing her through my girls in her class. She was not a teacher, she was a lady, a friend, an inspiration. She never without a greeting, smile, and kind word. I admired her in every way possible, and wished I could be just even a little bit like her, so graceful, so elegant, and so unaware of her beauty and charm that matched her talent. God be with you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. Darlene was a wonderful neighbor; having Birthday Parties for all the May birthdays in the neighborhood, visiting over the fence and in her house. She watered my flowers when I was too sick to do it this past year and made sure my garbage was put out. I am so sorry I won’t be able to be at Darlene’s funeral. My sympathy to all of you!

Darlene Mowdy was the epitome of class. She always had such a calm demeanor in my dealing with her. She encouraged me even though I could barely draw a picture of my name! She was always glad to see me whenever I would run into her during my increasingly more seldom trips home to Tioga. I have always believed that as amazing a teacher as she was, she was a even a better person. As many have said, she was a beautiful person inside and out. She will be missed by her family, her friends and her community.

To the Mowdy kids— these final good byes are so hard and my heart is with you. Darlene touched countless lives just being who she was. What a talent as a teacher, an artist and so generous with her time and talent! I’m so thankful for your moms’s friendship to my mom. I think they had so much fun together!
