Dolores Grubb
January 1, 1933 - January 17, 2018

Residence: Williston, North Dakota

Dolores Carolyn Grubb was born January 1, 1933 to Lee and Josie (Hauskey) Grubb in Williston, ND. Dolores and her older brother Dewayne were raised along the river by Lake Jesse in a log cabin. She attended a country school up until the 4th grade when her mother became very ill and she stayed home to take care of her. The family spent many lonely winters in the valley unable to leave due to impassable roads. To pass the time, Dolores and her brother would sneak away to the car and play their guitars and sing, both had amazing voices. In their earlier years they would ride horses down to the river and jump in. Dolores always had a deep love for all animals, especially for horses and cats.

When Dolores turned 18 she moved into town and started working as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital. This time in Dolores life would be her most carefree, driving her Chevy convertible car around town and attending dances, while dreaming of moving to New York and becoming a fashion designer. It would be at one of those dances that she would meet and later marry her husband and move to Arnegard, ND. To this union they had four children; Carolyn, Marc, Scott and Ricky. The family bought a piece of land on top of Cedar Coulee in the hopes of building a family homestead.

Dolores always felt that the grass was greener on the other side of the fence and with this thought she moved her children unexpectedly west to Spokane, WA. Due to her mental illness many challenges occurred over the next several years of her life and her children would eventually be taken and raised by their father. Dolores would ultimately find her way back home to Williston and through the efforts of family, Northwest Human Service Center and the “Drop In” Community Center she would find happiness, safety and her family. A special thanks to Director Bill Rudolph who ran the Drop In and was instrumental in assisting Dolores with her illness. The holidays spent at the Center would be a treasured tradition for her. She would spend many hours with Ronnie Wanner and Nancy Gilbertson peeling a hundred pounds of potatoes for each holiday with the peelers they brought from home. The mental illness caused many challenges in Dolores life but as her children began having families of their own, the wounds caused by the illness began to heal. At the time of her death she would have 14 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren that she loved very much.

Dolores would enjoy her special friendships with Ronnie Wanner, Nancy Gilbertson and Darlene Polensky. These ladies would be known to take trips to the outlining communities to escape for a little while and appease their wandering souls or just to have a coke.

When Dolores could no longer live by herself she moved to Bethel Nursing Home. Bethel’s nursing staff, CNA’s and housekeepers would become her extended family who would love to hear her laugh. The family will be forever grateful for their love and support. On January 17, 2018 Dolores passed away peacefully while eating her favorite snack, peanut butter on toast. “We love you mom”

Dolores is survived by her children; Carolyn, Mark, Scott and Ricky; along with her 14 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Josie Grubb; her brother, Duane Grubb; her grandson, Sean Lund; granddaughter, Sara-Marie Lund and infant great grandson, Bradley Lund.

I lost contact with Dolores several years ago, but many times through the years, have fondly thought of her and the times we shared together. Her and her smile and stories were a joy to be around! My very sincere sympathy to her family and friends. Love, Laureen
