Dale Carlyle Jorgenson
August 19, 1936 - November 5, 2017

Place of Birth: Watford City, ND
Residence: Rural Watford City, ND
Age: 81

Dale Jorgenson, 81, of rural Watford City, ND, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Watford City. The Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Watford City is assisting the family.

Dale C. Jorgenson was born August 19, 1936 in Watford City, ND to Carl and Helen (Dodge) Jorgenson. He lived his early years on the Jorgenson ranch southeast of Watford City. Dale was educated in a country school through eighth grade and then went on to graduate from Watford City High School in 1956. While in high school, Dale was active in Golden Gloves Boxing, traveling from Canada to Minneapolis winning several championship bouts. He went on to Dickinson State College, where he competed in college rodeo as a member of the first Dickinson State Rodeo team.

Dale’s first NDRA championship came in 1957 where he won the Bareback Riding championship as well as the All Around Cowboy honors. Throughout the next 20 years he would excel in nearly all events; garnering championships in Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping. In addition to his years as a competitor, Dale served many terms of directorship on the North Dakota Rodeo Association and High School Association boards.

Dale married his high school sweetheart Barbara Thomas in 1958. They began their life together living and building a family in Watford City.
Dale and Barbara purchased their ranch in rural Watford City in 1963 where they make their home today. They raised a family there, hosted many aspiring rodeo cowboys for practice sessions and sometimes a roof over their head or a place to tell a few stories. There was always room for anyone who needed a place to stay.

One of Dale’s proudest moments was his induction to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2002. To be recognized by his peers was an honor unparalleled.

Dale was a member of the Badlands Saddle Club, North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, North Dakota Rodeo Association, North Dakota High School Rodeo Association, McKenzie County Grazing Association, Montana Team Ropers Association, Wrangler Team Roping Championships, Fifty Years in the Saddle, and First Lutheran Church.

Dale is survived by his wife of 59 years Barbara Jorgenson; son, Tim (Sue) and their sons Shane and Clay; Son, Tom and his sons Chris (Brittany) and Seth, daughter Shelby; daughter, Joan and her daughter Samantha, her son Deagan.

Dale was preceded in death by his father, Carl Jorgenson; grandson, Josh Kitzmann; daughter-in-law, Teresa Rustad Jorgenson.

The Good Shepherd Home feels empty without Dale. It was an honor to get to know Dale and take care of him and he will be missed by all of our staff and residents. I am happy he is at peace and no longer suffering and I'm sure he's riding and roping up in Heaven just like he loved to do. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Barb and family. May wonderful memories of Dale keep your heart full always. We love you!

I was saddened by the news of Dales passing. There is wisdom in knowing we do not understand the universe and all of life. Death is one. May gods tender mercies and your precious memories comfort you. I smile when I think of the memories I have of Dale and sad that he no longer graces this world. May our heavenly father take all of you in his arms for comfort as you journey through your loss. There is sadness in your heart now from losing him but in time it will lessen and it will bring a smile back to your face when you think of his memory and how greatly he touched each and every one of you! Love to all ~ J

Dale was one in a million, a kind and gentle man beloved by anyone who knew him ! I know you all will miss him, but I am sure you would agree he is one happy man in the arms of the Lord getting to see family and friends that have passed before him. I know mom and dad were happy to see him again. Love to you Barb and know that we share your sadness .

Dale was such a unique individual I doubt there will ever be another like him !! He was always my hero in every way. I remember well that great big, kind heart and positive attitude. I don't know of anyone who worked harder, or played any harder either. I miss that hearty laugh and big wide smile he had no matter the circumstances, good or bad. I remember him sharing his new found faith in God with me at the end of the winter of '64-'65. Under that rough, tough cowboy exterior he had a tender heart that he shared honestly and quietly. His love for, and devotion to Barb and the kids was second to none. Dale will probably be remembered most for the rodeo legend he is, but he was so much more than that.....!! God Bless his memory that lives on in all of us.
