Helen Martin Berg, age 92, passed away peacefully at Roosevelt Medical Center in Culbertson, Montana on October 3rd, 2017.

Helen was born on January 31, 1925 in Wolf Point, MT, on her mother’s birthday; she was the first of eleven of Frank and Marjorie Whitmus’s family. She grew up and attended grade school in the Sand Creek area south of Wolf Point. She attended high school in Circle, MT and graduated in 1943.

After graduating, she went to Bremerton, WA; where she lived with her aunt and uncle and worked in the Naval shipyards. After a year, she moved back to Wolf Point and found work with MDU.

She married Raymond Martin on June 17, 1945 at the Ebenezer Lutheran church in McCabe. They made their first home in Wolf Point where they became parents to sons, Larry and Verlin. Helen worked for MDU and First State Bank and Raymond worked at Camrud Motors.

In 1954, they purchased and moved to the Gunder Martin family farm northeast of Culbertson. This is where their son, Kevin was born. Helen was involved in all farming activities and kept busy with yard work and gardening. She worked for Mountain Bell Telephone, Roosevelt County ASCS, a law firm, and also an insurance agency.

Tragedy paid an unwelcome call when in 1971 their son; Verlin was killed in an automobile accident. Then in 1983, tragedy called again when her husband Ray passed away very suddenly. She retired from the ASCS office in 1987 and continued to live on the family farm until 1988.

She married Reuben Berg in 1988, and they lived on his farm northwest of Poplar. In 1996, they moved to Fort Peck to enjoy their retirement years. Reuben fell victim to Alzheimer’s disease and passed away in 2003.

Helen continued to make her home in Fort Peck until she had a heart attack. She then moved to the Prairie Ridge retirement home in Glasgow for six years. In May of 2016, she entered the Roosevelt Memorial Medical Center in Culbertson.

Preceding her in death were her parents, first husband, Ray; second husband, Reuben; a son, Verlin; grandson, Gareth; and three brothers, Lloyd, David and Edward; and one sister, Betty Mae,

Helen is survived by her sons, Larry and Sara Martin of Hood River, OR; Kevin and Doreen Martin of Culbertson, MT; her grandsons, Kile and Richelle Martin and Logan, Chase and Robyn Martin and Vivian, and Dylan Martin; and by her granddaughter, Inga and Donnie Herneisen and Brynn and Tieryn.
