Mavis Foss, 82, of Minot, ND, formerly of Tioga, ND, met her Lord on Saturday afternoon, May 13, 2017 at her Minot residence. Her funeral arrangements are with Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Tioga.

Mavis Elaine Foss was born in Powers Lake on August 23, 1934 to Esther and Michael Skarphol, a “Doc Goodman baby”. She grew up in McGregor where she was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran. Before graduating from high school in 1951 she attended Dakota Lutheran School in Minot her sophomore year, she had fond memories of her involvement in music as well as good teachers and new friends. Following graduation she went to UND Grand Forks for a year.

On March 22, 1953 she married Morris Foss, with their first home in Ray where Steve and Diane were born. McGregor was their next home where Lori was born. After farming for a time they moved to Tioga. As well as being a housewife, she worked at the Tioga Cafeteria, the Tioga Clinic, and owned the M& M Drive-Inn. She took great pride in giving people good food and service. They got their dream farm (dream kitchen) and returned to the country. Every place she lived had beautiful flowers and pristine lawns. Everyone was welcomed with great food and warmth of her own. She was always happy to have company of family and friends. Minot was their home since 2004.

She enjoyed a good game of pinochle, making lefse, sewing, knitting, visiting, needlework, dancing and playing music.

Many special friends and precious family members preceded her in death, namely her husband of 63 years Morris and grandson, Joshua James.

Mavis is survived by her son, Steve (Susan) of Grinnell, IA; daughters, Diane (Stanton) Grubb of Berthold, ND, and Lori (Jim) Beattie of Rochester Hills, MI. Her sisters, Bernice (Alvin) Barenthsen of Powers Lake, ND, and Arlis (Marlin) Watterud of McGregor, ND; and brother Harlan (Fern) Skarphol of Ryder, several nieces and nephews, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
