It Is Our Privilege And Purpose To Serve You
Dorthy Marie Skogen
January 23, 1925 - June 19, 2016

Place of Birth: Williston, ND
Residence: Williston, ND, formerly of rural Epping, ND
Age: 91

Dorthy Skogen, 91, of Williston, died Sunday evening, June 19, 2016 at Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston. Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Williston is assisting the family.

Dorthy Marie Tong Skogen was born on January 23, 1925, to Roy and Martha (Raich) Tong in Ray, ND. She attended the Temple Elementary School and was a member of the graduating class of 1942 from Ray High School. Upon her graduation, she worked at the Citizens State Bank in Ray, ND, met Osmond Skogen, and they married on November 14, 1943, at the Epping Lutheran Church in Epping, ND. To this union, two children were born – Gary Eugene on December 19, 1945, and Phyllis Jean on June 14, 1949. She worked along side of Osmond at the farm. As he said, “She has been behind me every step of the way.”

She was a great hostess and cook and had many special dishes that everyone enjoyed – her porcupine meatballs, her Salisbury steak, and especially, pecan pie!!!

Dorthy was a member of the Epping Lutheran Church until their move to Williston in l986. She served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, as well as held various offices in the Ladies Aid. She was very proud of the quality of work that the members of her circle did while serving for funerals, weddings, and special events at the church. As residents of Williston, Dorthy and Osmond became members of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, where she volunteered many hours, as well as making the meatballs for the annual dinner and providing a variety of delicacies for the annual bake sale.

Dorthy had many hobbies and talents. She was a member of a bowling team in Williston and enjoyed the friendships of those gals. She always was up for a game of cards – pinochle, whist, or bridge - and appreciated her many friends from card clubs and the challenges of a competitive card game.

Her flower gardens, both at the farm and in Williston, could easily have been pictured in the Better Homes and Garden Yards of the Week. She often shared plants with the advice, “Oh, just stick it in the ground and it will grow!” Really??

She was an expert seamstress, and along with her aprons and towels, she brought her divinity, sweet relish, salsa, and jam varieties to craft shows, where people stood in line to buy “Dorthy’s wares.”

Recently, Dorthy and Osmond became residents of Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston, ND. They enjoyed the extended family and activities that became a part of their lives. They have celebrated many milestones there – Dorthy’s 90th birthday, Dorthy and Osmond’s 72nd wedding anniversary, as well as being named the 2016 Valentine King and Queen of Bethel Home.

Dorthy is survived by her husband of 72 years, Osmond Skogen; her son and wife, Gary and Alvina (Strand) Skogen; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Christian, Nancy, and Osmond Skogen, John and Angela Skogen, and Lindsay and Keith Rath, Taylor and Noah; her sister, Cora Weyrauch of Ross, ND; sisters-in-law, Elaine Tong of Bismarck, ND, Joyce Tong of Ray, ND, Dolores Skogen of Fargo, ND, Clara Johnson of Kalispell, MT, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death, her parents, her daughter Phyllis Jean Johnson, her brothers/sisters and spouses, Roy Tong, John Edward Tong, Robert and Arla Tong, Hank and Annie Ringey, Vivian Engen, and Philip Weyrauch, as well as members of the Skogen family, Harry and Berit Leverenz, Ted and Annie Anderson, Conrad Skogen, and Percy Johnson.

Memorial are suggested to the Bethel Lutheran Home Activity Fund.

Our family wants to thank the staff at Bethel Lutheran Home for their kindness and loving care of Dorthy, while she was a resident there.

Am so sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful lady and I have a lot of good memories of her from when Phyllis and 3 to 4 got together at your house after some of us had come out to farm on bikes. She was always a gracious hostess. I also remember running into her and Ozzie at the Legion in Stanley every so often. She had a long life, but will be missed. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. 40871

Gary: Was good to touch base with you in Ray a couple weeks back. Remember well that your folks came up in the conversation. Dorothy and Ozzie are the substance needed to make any community thrive and their contributions to the Epping-Ray area were many and manifest. Be well. Ty

It brings me great sadness to hear of Dorthy's passing. She was a wonderful person and exceptional parent. My parents, Julian & Lila Haugen always enjoyed the F Union & church activities when they could visit with Dorthy & Ossie. She and Ossie dedicated almost their entire lives as loving and supportive to my dear friend Phyllis. I will never forget how she would always remind Phyllis's visitors to speak with her not at her. Frequently, during a visit, a tear would run down Phyllis's face. How strong you were for your family and Phyllis. It was no wonder why Phyllis was one of the nicest, kindest and most gentle person I have ever met and never the typical teen.
My heart aches for her mourning family, Gary & Alvina and your families. My prayers are with you.

Ozzie and family~ I am thankful that I saw Ozzie and Dorthy during Saturday Bingo and we had a chance to talk on our walk back from the game. Dorthy was a wonderful lady and I was honored to be her nurse for a time at Bethel. It was always a joy to see her, Ozzie, and the family. Sorry for your loss. I will be thinking of you all and sending love your way.

Oh Dorthy, you were beautiful on the inside and out. You were such a COOL mom. Remember meeting up with you and Ozzie at the Snow White and we all caught up on FUN memories. I also remember when Phyllis passed away. After the funeral you called me and talked for a half hr. It was a "Gift" I will never forget. Gary, your mom wanted to tell me what it meant when she saw the plant I had sent. (You have to understand I wanted a blooming plant with colorful beautiful flowers, and all they had that time was a Peace Lily.) The tears rolled down my cheeks when your mom said "I was soooooo happy to see that Peace Lily, Linda. It was PERFECT as Phyllis is now finally at PEACE. (My ordering that had to have been a "God Thing.)" I cried, she cried, it was a special moment that I've never forgotten. Hugs to all of you this day. Rest in Peace precious Dorthy, you and Phyllis are together again.

Gary and Alvina, Chris, John, Lindsay and families,
I was sorry to hear of Dorthy’s passing. I know this is a difficult time for all of you. Saying “good-bye” is never easy.
What a devoted son you have been, Gary! Over the years you and Alvina and your children have brought such joy to Dorthy’s life. You all made sure that Dorthy and Ozzie were always included in your family celebrations and activities. Seeing the smiles on their faces told me they were pleased and happy to be there and so proud of all of you.
I will always remember Dorthy’s words to me when I told her how impressed I had always been with her remarkable years of dedication to Phyllis and her care. She quickly dismissed my words by saying, “You would have done the same for your daughter.” It gave me pause as I guess I had never thought of it in quite that way.
My (inherited) green apron comes out at holiday time. Dorthy made it for my mother and wanted to be sure that it was her favorite color, so green it is. Of course, I am reminded, too, that it is perfectly made without a stitch out of place. I remember the taste of her salsa as well, it was unlike any other.
Cherish your memories. Please know that you are in my thoughts today, tomorrow and always and I love you all. Jeanine

Gary, Alvina and Family. I'm feeling sad right now cause I can't come and be with you , my love and prayers are going out to you. I loved Aunt Dorothy. I am so glad I got to go visit her when I was home in May. I don't have any recent remembrances of her because I was go from Ray. I remember when she gave me advice when I needed it and she seemed to be always right. She loved her children and it showed by how well she took care of Phyllis. And I'm sure she would have done the same with you. Now she can hold her daughter once again in her arms. I remember all the good times out at the farm . It seems like every New Years Day we would be at your farm. Those were good days.

My memory of Aunt Dorothy will always be with me. My love and prayers go out to you today.

Uncle Ozzie Gary Alvina and her precious grandchildren and great grandchildren...To live to be 91 years old and be in good health is an accomplishment...She lived a good life ...and to be married all those years with you Ozzie ...how awesome. They were a great role model to all of us..and really enjoyed every visit we had with her when we came back home...So many many memories at their home in Epping...that cooking and baking must have been a Tong thing...and hopefully we all carry it on for another generation...She definitely will live in the hearts that she touched... So keep her memories in your heart and her laughter in your mind and she will live in your hearts forever..Always remember when someone you love becomes a memory that memory becomes a treasure that nobody can steal from us...that is why God gives us memories...and those memories make me smile...Another kind and caring soul has been called to heaven and hopefully we all get to join them one day...God be with each of you as you go through this trying time...Love each and every one of you
